The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in West Hollywood increased by one to a total of 130 as of noon today. That means one of every 283 residents is confirmed to have the disease.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health today reported 1,035 new confirmed infections. That brings the countywide total to 18,517, up from 17,508 on Thursday.
The Health Department reported that there have been 52 new deaths associated with the COVID-19 infection, bringing the total countywide to 848. Forty-three people who died were over the age of 65. Seven people who died were between the ages of 41 and 65, and one person who died was between the ages of 18 and 40. Forty-two people had underlying health conditions including 34 people over the age of 65.
With reports across the country of multiple deaths associated with the virus at senior living and senior healthcare centers, the Health Department issued a new order to improve health conditions at such facilities. The order includes measures that restrict visitors, suspend all communal dining and activities to ensure physical distancing, require frequent temperature checks for staff, patients and residents and testing for all employees and residents. Staff will be required to wear surgical masks at all times and personal protective equipment when appropriate. Residents also will need to wear surgical masks or cloth face coverings when they are outside of their personal room.
The Health Department also announced that restrictions on the “Safer at Home Order,” which has required the closure of all non-essential businesses, will be relaxed only when the county can:
- Ensure hospitals and primary care and specialty services have the capacity to care for people who are ill and for those who need routine health care.
- Ensure that there are protections for vulnerable populations – especially the elderly, people with underlying health conditions, residents in institutional settings, people experiencing homelessness, and people with poor access to needed services and supports. This includes making sure that there are enough trained staff and personal protective equipment to appropriately manage care at institutional settings.
- Ensure there is enough capacity for testing, isolating, and quarantining individuals and for surveillance to prevent the spread of infection.
- Ensure that people will continue to maintain maximum physical distancing and infection control at all spaces and places where people interact with each other outside of their homes.
Nearby communities again saw an increase in confirmed infections. Beverly Hills saw an increase of one from yesterday’s count, with a total of 103 as of noon today. The number of confirmed infections in Culver City grew from 49 yesterday to 53 today. Hollywood also saw an increase, with the number of infections jumping from 169 on Thursday to 174 today. The number of confirmed infections in the Melrose neighborhood increased by seven to a total of 293 today.
Seventy-five residents of the Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles have been confirmed to be infected, up from 74 on Thursday. That means 934.58 of 100,000 residents of that area have been infected – the highest rate among the 335 cities and communities surveyed by the Health Department.
The number of infections in the Crestview neighborhood grew by one to a total of 59, meaning that 519 per 100,000 residents there have been infected. Crestview is the second most highly infected neighborhood. The Vermont Square neighborhood in Los Angeles is the third most infected neighborhood. Its 34 infections, up two from Thursday, mean 444.04 of every 100,000 residents is infected.
The Carthay neighborhood in Los Angeles had 58 infections as of noon today, ranking it fourth with 403.82 infections per 100,000 residents. Rancho Dominguez continues to see no increase in the previously confirmed 10 infections, which equals 375.8 per 100,000 residents and makes it the fifth most highly infected area.
The Hancock Park neighborhood has 60 confirmed infections as of today., which ranks it sixth with 352.13 infections per 100,000 residents. West Hollywood is the seventh most highly infected community, with 351.82 residents per 100,000 having a confirmed COVID-19 infection. With its 293 infections, the Melrose neighborhood has 377.11 infections per 100,000 residents and is the seventh most infected area
As reported previously, the county has loosened conditions for qualifying for same-day tests, which formerly were reserved for those with symptoms of an infection who were 65 or older or had an underlying health condition such as heart disease. Those who want to be tested now must only exhibit symptoms of a possible infection, which include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing. Those who want to be tested must first go online to see if they qualify and to book an appointment. A testing site adjacent to West Hollywood is on Alden Drive at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when out in the public procuring or providing essential services. N95 and surgical masks should only be used by healthcare workers, first responders and essential workers providing care for people who are ill.
Essential businesses must provide a cloth face covering for all employees to wear while performing duties that involve contact with other employees and or the public and to post physical distancing plans. The public is required to wear a face covering to enter essential businesses as well. Beaches, trails and trailheads and non-essential businesses remain closed, and all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit remain prohibited.

Working at a West Hollywood grocery has been tough lately! Most are very appreciative but the young gay millennial types have been so rude and arrogant! Just the other day I asked two to please step back from myself and an elderly lady I was helping and they acted so offended and made rude remarks. “Your healthy, your job is not essential” unfortunately this happens daily at work with there millennial types.
This is not perfect math but there are 640 acres in one square mile. West Hollywood is 1.9 square miles. That’s 1216 acres. With 130 Covid (+) to date that is one for every 9 acres. West Hollywood Park is 8 acres. It’s basically right round the corner and we can’t see it.
We may not be able to see it, but we could understand the essence of it and more in terms of how to protect ourselves if this silly city took a more serious and direct approach. The leaders are removed and enjoying what may be regarded as the “Manyana Approach” which essentially means lacking in immediacy. West Hollywood is beginning to mirror the antics of the Simpleton In Chief.
