As of today, there are 137 confirmed COVID-19 infections in West Hollywood, the same count as yesterday and another sign that infection rate is slowing
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health today reported 1,065 new confirmed COVID-19 infections, bringing the total to 24,215. There have been 62 new deaths, bringing that total to 1,172. Two West Hollywood residents have died thus far.
Forty-six people who died were over the age of 65, seven people who died were between the ages of 41 and 65, and one person who died was between the ages of 18 and 40. Forty-six people had underlying health conditions including 39 people over the age of 65 and seven people between the ages of 41 and 65.
Beverly Hills saw two new infections, bringing its total to 108. The number of infections in Culver City also increased by two, to a total of 66. The Hollywood neighborhood has three more reported infections, bringing the total to 130. The number of confirmed infections in the Melrose neighborhood increased by 22 to a total of 352.
In its announcement of the latest count of confirmed infections, the Health Department noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its guidance on how long people who are positive for COVID-19 should self-isolate. “New evidence suggests it may take longer for the virus to shed, which means that an infected person may be able to infect other people for a longer period of time than was initially thought,” the Health Department reports. “People who are positive or presumed positive for COVID-19 should now self-isolate for 10 days and 72 hours after fever and symptoms subside. This means you must stay home until your fever has resolved without the use of fever-reducing medications and there is improvement in your respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath) for at least 3 days (72 hours) after recovery, and at least 10 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared or you were tested.
“If you have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 or is presumed to be infected with COVID-19, you must quarantine for 14 days from your last contact with that individual. If you begin experiencing symptoms, you must self-isolate for 10 days and 72 hours after fever and symptoms subside. Individuals who are elderly or who have underlying health conditions may be at higher risk of serious illness and should contact their doctor as soon as they are sick.”
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Wednesday that all residents of Los Angeles County now can get free coronavirus testing at city-run sites. Previously, testing was available only to those with symptoms as well as essential workers and in nursing homes and other institutions. However, when it comes to same- or next-day testing, priority will continue to be given to people suffering a fever, cough and shortness of breath. Those who want to book a testing appointment can do so online. As WEHOville has reported previously, some health experts have questioned how well the public testing process is Los Angeles County actually works. A story in the Los Angeles Times notes that the federal Food and Drug Administration doesn’t prefer that testing process, which involves a quick swab of the throat, and recommends a deeper process in which one inserts a swab deep into the nose.
The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when out in the public procuring or providing essential services. N95 and surgical masks should only be used by healthcare workers, first responders and essential workers providing care for people who are ill.
Essential businesses must provide a cloth face covering for all employees to wear while performing duties that involve contact with other employees and or the public and to post physical distancing plans. The public is required to wear a face covering to enter essential businesses as well. Beaches, trails and trailheads and non-essential businesses remain closed, and all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit remain prohibited.

The chart shows new cases of Covid-19. Has anyone seen estimates of ACTIVE cases in West Hollywood? I assume – but perhaps I’m wrong – that the number of contagious people walking around is less since many have recovered?
Unfortunately there is no data on that. Certainly many of those confirmed to have been infected early on are now not infected. At the same time, health officials say that the number of those infected is a lot higher than the number of those confirmed to be infected. That’s because many of those infected don’t have symptoms in the early stages and because many aren’t tested.
