Social distancing? Face coverings?
Many of dozen or more customers of Barney’s Beanery who were eating and drinking and lounging on the sidewalk this afternoon apparently were unaware of rules and recommendations from various health organizations that are intended to reduce spread of the COVID-19 virus.
The recommendation is that people sit or stand at least six feet apart from one another to reduce the chance of the COVID-10 virus travelling through the air from one person to another. Another recommendation, which will be requirement enforced by the City of West Hollywood beginning tomorrow, is that people wear face coverings when they are out in public.
The Los Angeles County Health Department on March 16 announced that restaurants would be allowed only to offer delivery and take out service — an effort to reduce the chance that the COVID-19 virus could be spread among employees and customers sitting close together in a restaurant space. On March 19, the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control decided to allow restaurants with liquor licenses to also sell beer, wine, and pre-mixed drinks/cocktails for pick-up or delivery. However, it stipulated that drinks with alcohol must be sold with food from the same establishment, and alcoholic beverages must have a secure lid on them.
Barney’s, which is at 8447 Santa Monica Blvd. across from Sal Guarriello Veterans Memorial Park, has had someone on the front porch serving up meals to go for quite a while. This afternoon those in line were asked to stand six feet apart while they waited in line to be served.
But once they grabbed their meals (and cocktails, which an employee tells WEHOville you can actually buy without buying a meal) more than a dozen of them decided to dine out on the sidewalk.
WEHOville posted a photo on Facebook on May 5 of a similar clustering of people waiting for cocktails outside Pink Taco on Sunset Boulevard , many without masks and standing very closes together.
WEHOville has reached out to Pink Taco and Barney’s Beanery with questions about the close gatherings but has gotten no response.
Readers are invited to take photos of examples of egregious violations of the social distancing rules and the face covering rules and share them with WEHOville ([email protected]) for publication. That might make it more likely that people become aware of the violations and the impact they can have on the health of members of the community.
Covering your mouth and nose greatly reduces the chance that you will eject the tiny and invisible virus particle onto someone else when you cough, sneeze, or talk. And remember, if you think you don’t need to abide by that rule because you don’t have the virus, you actually might have it. It can take two weeks for the symptoms to show.
Where were all you outraged people in 2017 when we had over 600 pediatric flu deaths in 2017? We had over 80,000 total deaths from a flu virus that did not discriminate like SARS-CoV-2. In fact, younger people were just as susceptible as older people. Granted, the cases were spread out like any other flu season rather than infecting people in a short window like SARS-CoV-2. The images from the pool party in Arkansas (?) over this past weekend were horrifying. As were others from different states. To me, they are playing with fire. Two comments on the news continue to haunt me. One young person (without a face mask, yet alone social distancing) said that if you don’t want to get C-19, stay home. Another, again without a mask, said he wasn’t wearing one because his Dear Leader (Trump) does not wear one. Possible illness or death by abhorrent example.

A reality check here. In 1918, The Spanish Flu lasted 2 years and came in 3 waves. 500 million were infected and there were 50 million deaths, most of which happened in the second wave.
People felt inconvenienced then and now with the protocols, even though measures were instituted. When lifted, they rejoiced in the streets. A few weeks later, the second wave hit.
There is no crystal ball or wishful thinking that will cure this other than the individual responsibility of everyone.

I am as pro-local business as the next person but WTF! If I can be cited for not wearing a mask while taking a walk, why hasn’t the Sheriff cited these businesses for lack of social distancing. Seems strange that the City Council insists on keeping our parks closed yet turns a blind eye to some rather obvious social distancing violations by our local businesses. I guess I forgot that the City is only critical of irresponsible behavior that happens in Red States.

Instead of being good neighbors, your selfish attitudes keep a whole city on lockdown. Nobody likes being locked down, but we stay home to protect each other.

I currently live in Vancouver BC, I am hoping to move to California once this pandemic is over. I saw this and was very angry, we have this taking place at our beaches over the mothers day weekend as it was really warm.
Its infuriating that people and businesses can be so ignorant and disrespectful.
I also took several pics of the same thing, many people drinking outside (which is whatever) but non of them with masks and no social distance at all. Barney’s is going to F everything up for other bars trying to open.
