COVID-19: Health Department Sees Decline in Percentage Infected

Today there are 167 West Hollywood residents who are confirmed to be infected with the COVID-19 virus, an increase of one from the 166 confirmed on Friday.  The Los Angeles County Health Department reports that it now is seeing steady declines countywide in hospitalizations, deaths and the percent of people testing positive for the virus.

The Health Department reports there have been 1,032  newly confirmed infections across the county, bringing that total to 44,055.  There have been 41 new deaths associated with virus, bringing that total to 2,090.

The Health Department’s COVID-19 dashboard continues to report that only four West Hollywood residents have died of COVID-19-related infections. It shows no increase in yesterday’s count of 2,391 West Hollywood residents who have been tested for the virus.

Barbara Ferrer,  L.A. County’s director of public health, said in today’s announcement that “the percent of people tested who are positive in L.A. County is now at an all-time low of 8.5%. In comparison, New York City’s positivity rate is currently 28%.  The increase we see in our number of cases is because we have increased the number of people we are testing, and this is a good thing. 

“We are testing more people per capita in L.A. County than the state of California, the state of Washington, the state of Georgia, the United States, and Seattle King-County. Our increased testing capacity allows for quicker identification, treatment, and isolation of people who are positive for COVID-19 and their close contacts; this helps reduce the spread of the virus.”

As of today, the number of confirmed infections in Beverly Hills has not increased from the 128 infections reported yesterday. The number of infections in Culver City remains at 135. The number of infections in the Hollywood neighborhood has increased by three to 251.  The number of confirmed infections in the Melrose neighborhood increased by five to a total of 506.

As of today, the City of West Hollywood is requiring that all people wear face coverings if they are out in public.  Face coverings will not be required for children under two years of age, anyone who has trouble breathing, or anyone who is otherwise unable to remove a face covering without assistance. Children between two- and eight-years-old should only wear face coverings with adult supervision.

Such coverings have been determined to reduce the likelihood that an infected person can transmit the COVID-19 virus through the air by coughing or sneezing or even talking. Some people who are infected may be unaware of it and not showing symptoms at first.

Sheriff’s deputies will monitor compliance with the face covering rule and, according to the city, “will provide education and warnings, and will cite as appropriate. Not wearing a face covering is considered a crime and individuals are subject to citation.”

The best protection against COVID-19 continues to be to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when in contact with others from outside your household.

The Health Department states that “People who have underlying health conditions remain at much greater risk for serious illness from COVID-19, so it will continue to be very important for the county’s vulnerable residents to stay at home as much as possible, to have groceries and medicine delivered, and to call their providers immediately if they have even mild symptoms.”
