Struggling With the Social Isolation and Loneliness of COVID-19? Here Is Some Help

Some people are struggling with the medical/physical impact of COVID-19 and some are struggling with the financial impact of the pandemic. But virtually everyone, whether infected with the virus or not, is struggling with the social isolation and loneliness that results from our efforts to socially distance ourselves from one another.

“Social Isolation and Loneliness in the Time of COVID-19: The Importance of Connection” is an online forum scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. next Tuesday (Oct. 6) to address those struggles.  It is the latest in a series of webinars the City of West Hollywood has hosted to address COVID-19 issues.

Discussion topics will include:

  • Signs and symptoms of social isolation and loneliness and the difference between them;
  • Impact of COVID-19 on the prevalence of social isolation & loneliness;
  • Demographics of community members experiencing social isolation and loneliness;
  • The importance of social connections and how best to foster their development; and
  • Programming and services provided by the city and its contracted and collaborative partners that create social connections.      

Forum presenters and panelists are: Maureen Feldman, director of the Social Isolation Impact Project of the MPTF (Motion Picture & Television Fund); Jamie Baker, program director of the Being Alive Mental Health & Wellness; Mandi Carpenter, manager, Arts, Wellness and Engagement, of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles; Marina Rhodes, recreation supervisor of the city’s Facilities & Recreation Services, and Kiera Pollock, program director at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. 

The forum is open to community members, social service providers’ staff and clients, and other interested individuals. Those interested in participating can register online. The forum will also be archived on the city’s coronavirus information page located at www.weho.org/coronavirus for future viewing.
