One in every 40 people in West Hollywood has tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, based on the most recent numbers from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Figures released Saturday show the city now has a cumulative total of 925 people who have tested positive since March. Dividing the population of West Hollywood – 37,000 people – by 925 reveals that one in every 40 people has tested positive.
That’s not to imply that one in every 40 people is currently contagious. People who tested positive more than a few weeks ago are no longer contagious according to the Centers for Disease Control. But that one in every 40 people does show how widespread COVID-19 has become.
That is why public health officials ordered Los Angeles County to go back into a Safer at Home lockdown, starting on Monday. This lockdown will not be as severe as the one issued in March; many non-essential businesses will be allowed to stay open, but at limited occupancy. The lockdown is currently scheduled to last three weeks, ending on Dec. 20.
That 925 cumulative cases for West Hollywood on Saturday is up nine people from Friday’s report. Los Angeles County registered 3,143 new cases on Saturday for a cumulative total of 390,891 positive cases since the pandemic began.
The county reported 19 new deaths on Saturday for a cumulative death toll of 7,623 people.
West Hollywood reported no new deaths. Its cumulative death toll remains at eight people.
There are 1,951 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 25% of these people are in the ICU, according to health officials.
More females than males have tested positive for coronavirus since the pandemic began, according to statistics the county provided. Some 188,044 females have tested positive, while 179,189 males have tested positive. Another 187 gender non-binary people have also tested positive, while the remainder of the cases are listed as “under investigation” which most likely means a sex was not indicated on the forms.

- Beverly Hills – 5 new cases for a total of 960 cases.
- Culver City – 4 new cases for a total of 619 cases.
- Hollywood – 12 new cases for a total of 1,856 cases.
- Melrose neighborhood – 18 new cases for a total of 2,790 cases.
- Miracle Mile – no new cases for a total of 293 cases.
- Park La Brea – 1 new case for a total of 186 cases.
- Santa Monica – 12 new cases for a total of 1,466 cases.

Spreading a lot of fear for a disease with a 99% survival rate.
The fear comes from overburdened hospitals and frontline workers, as well as the fact that more infections mean greater risk to vulnerable populations. If you haven’t developed empathy 9 months into this, you aren’t capable of it. I wish you and those closest to you continued good health because I would hate to see what would happen if you needed a bed in ICU following a car accident and none were available.

Local small businesses are closing. Thousands of workers are going without paychecks for food/rent/healthcare. Where is the empathy for them?
Personally, I don’t agree with how these closures and mandates have been handled. However, as long as the numbers stay up, we will have to contend with them because there have been no serious penalties for those not doing their part. None of that is helped by those less vulnerable who keep screaming that they shouldn’t have to follow the rules. Wear a damn mask and practice social distancing and none of this would be happening.
