Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Sunday crossed the 2,000 threshold, a number the county hasn’t been seen since the summer’s surge.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released figures showing there are now 2,049 people hospitalized with coronavirus, 98 more hospitalizations than on Saturday. Some 24% of the people hospitalized are in the ICU.
The rise in the number of hospitalizations this week has been sharp – over 600 people – another indication of how rapid this third wave of the pandemic has become. Below are the daily numbers of hospitalizations in the past week:
- Sun. Nov. 22 – 1,401 people
- Mon. Nov. 23 – 1,473 people
- Tues. Nov. 24 – 1,575 people
- Wed. Nov. 25 – 1,682 people
- Thurs. Nov. 26 – 1,809 people
- Fri. Nov. 27 – 1,893 people
- Sat. Nov. 28 – 1,951 people
- Sun. Nov. 29 – 2,049 people
Steadily rising numbers like this is why Los Angeles County will go back into a Safer at Home lockdown, starting on Monday. This lockdown will not be as severe as the one issued in March; many non-essential businesses will be allowed to stay open, but at limited occupancy.
The lockdown is currently scheduled to last three weeks, ending on Dec. 20. However, it could be extended if the numbers don’t come down. Health officials fear the number of new cases will only continue to rise as many people may have been exposed to the virus during the Thanksgiving holidays. Despite warnings against it, many people traveled for the holidays and/or gathered with groups of people outside their immediate household.
West Hollywood reported nine new cases of the virus on Sunday, while Los Angeles County had 5,087 new cases. That brings the city’s cumulative total to 934 cases and the county’s cumulative total to 383,275 cases.
The city reported no new deaths, but the county reported 37 new deaths for a cumulative toll of 7,580 deaths to date since the pandemic began. West Hollywood’s cumulative death toll is eight deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 16 new cases for a total of 976 cases.
- Culver City – 3 new cases for a total of 622 cases.
- Hollywood – 24 new cases for a total of 1,880 cases.
- Melrose neighborhood – 39 new cases for a total of 2,829 cases.
- Miracle Mile – 5 new cases for a total of 298 cases.
- Park La Brea – 2 new cases for a total of 188 cases.
- Santa Monica – 14 new cases for a total of 1,480 cases.
