Citing a detrimental impact on local business and a lack of scientific evidence, the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night opposing the Los Angeles County order prohibiting outdoor dining.
The resolution demands a motion be placed on next Tuesday’s agenda of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to repeal the health order.
Council members also called on the county to focus on implementing restrictions based on data and where outbreaks of coronavirus occur, whether that be in a particular industry, sector or area, and not apply restrictions unilaterally throughout the county.
Council staff was also directed to explore the creation of a local city health department and the city attorney was tasked with exploring legal action against the county.
The county health order prohibits indoor and outdoor dining, allowing only for take-out orders and deliveries, until at least Dec. 20.
The Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to approve the outdoor dining ban, which took effect a week ago on Nov. 25.
No word on whether the West Hollywood City Council will consider adopting a similar resolution against the county’s ban on outdoor dining at restaurants.
If Beverly Hills would enforce it’s mask wearing orders (especially with Crazy Pants and her band of “Freedom Marchers” infesting the business triangle on weekends) then they wouldn’t need a ban on outdoor dining. I’m not going to be sitting out of Canon anytime in the future when those unmasked plague-breathed Trumpies are flitting about whining about the election they lost..
I think they are making the wrong call, but it will be interesting to see how things play out for Beverly Hills, especially on the off chance they succeed in the long run in finding a way to rescind the ban, at least for themselves.
My sense is L.A. County’s three-week outdoor-dining ban will stand, including in Beverly Hills, and will logically be extended as community spread unfortunately reaches heretofore unseen levels partly as a result of Thanksgiving travel and gatherings.

Do it. Open the restaurants. Let people get back to work.
Local governments don’t have the power that is needed to solve this pandemic–the power to mint United States dollars. People need to be paid to stay home. Rents–including commercial rents–need to be forgiven. Businesses need to have their payrolls assumed by the federal government. This is what it will take to keep people home and keep our economy going, and our rulers refuse to do it, even though they could easily do so. One wonders why. We are 9 months into this pandemic and you still don’t realize how this affects everyone else?
To be fair, we were under the 2 week stay at home order that lasted for 9 months that really didn’t do much except delay the expected make the economy worse for a lot of people. Now we’re moving into the 3 week stay at home order and one can only imagine how fun that will be.
Beverly Hills gets it right on this one. The reality of Covid is it is disproportionately impacting lower income neighborhoods in Los Angeles County. Making decisions for West Hollywood and Beverly Hills when the problems are elsewhere doesn’t make sense, particularly with no real evidence that outdoor dining is dangerous. I’m liberal, but West Hollywood’s city council is a special kind of liberal, and we know they’ll virtue signal their way to keep restaurants closed.

There isn’t scientific evidence that dining outdoors is dangerous. The CDC report lumps indoor eating out with outdoor eating out, which of course leads to an inaccurate depiction of LA County since we’ve only had outdoor dining for months. Indoor dining should be banned everywhere, as that is actually dangerous to have people from multiple households indoors without masks on. There is a way for Beverly Hills to not comply, but that would require them having their own health department – like Pasadena. Instead, they rely on the county, and thus must abide by their rules. You can’t have it both ways.
Beverly Hills should form their own health department. West Hollywood as well.
They are pushing to form their own health department for just that reason.
