Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Wednesday that city is providing emergency relief funds to restaurant workers impacted by Los Angeles County’s outdoor dining ban.

Under the Secure Emergency Relief for Vulnerable Employees, or SERVE, residents of Los Angeles who work in the food service industry are eligible for a one-time stipend of $800.

The program will help those who have lost their jobs, in addition to restaurant industry workers who may remain employed but have lost at least half their income this year.

Residents of West Hollywood are NOT eligible for the stipends. Only residents of Los Angeles.

The SERVE program will be funded through the nonprofit Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles. The fund will dedicate more than $3 million to SERVE.

“SERVE will be a lifeline for 4,000 of our most vulnerable and beloved workers, as all Angelenos work to bring those COVID numbers back down so we can reopen more,” Garcetti said during his weekly COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday

The SERVE application period starts Monday at 9 a.m. and remains open until Dec 11 at 11:50 p.m. If more than 4,000 people apply (which will most likely be the case), recipients will be selected at random, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.

The eligibility requirements are:

  1. Must live in the city of Los Angeles.
  2. Must be 18 years or older.
  3. Must have had total annual income of less than $58,450 prior to the COVID-19 crisis.
  4. Must work in the food service industry and be able to prove income has been impacted.

Applicants selected to receive the SERVE stipends will be required to provide verification of meeting the eligibility requirements.

If unsure if you live in the city of Los Angeles, visit the LA City Neighborhood Info website.

Immigration status will not be considered in awarding the SERVE grants, but all applicants must have an email address. Those selected will be notified by email.

No word on if West Hollywood will create a similar SERVE program for its residents.

It is something. The Feds should be helping people, not the cash-starved states.

Jeez, it’s a good thing that there are only 4000 unemployed restaurant workers. I don’t think this will even cover 1% of the affected workers.

I can’t believe this is the guy that they want to consider for running as Transportation secretary

This is good, but not nearly good enough. The federal government should be paying everyone to stay home, without exception.

The same place that money comes from–the federal government. That’s where dollars come from. There is an unlimited supply. The only constraint on the creation of dollars is inflation–which occurs only when an economy is in full production, and we ain’t even close to that.
