One in every 37 West Hollywood residents has tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began as the city crossed the 1,000 person threshold for cumulative number of COVID cases on Monday. Meanwhile, Los Angeles County has almost 3,000 people hospitalized with coronavirus.
West Hollywood saw ten new cases on Monday for a cumulative total of 1,006 cases. There were no new deaths from COVID in the city. The city’s cumulative death toll remains at nine deaths.
This is not to imply that 1,006 people are currently infectious. People who tested positive more than a few weeks ago are no longer contagious according to the Centers for Disease Control. But that one in every 37 people does show how widespread COVID-19 has become.
The county reported 8,086 new cases on Monday, with 2,988 people hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those hospitalized, 24% are in the ICU.
That 8,086 is down from Sunday’s record high of 10,528 new cases. However, the numbers for Mondays are often low due to lags in reporting over the weekend.
The 11-county Southern California region’s availability of ICU beds now stands at 10.9%, up from Sunday’s 10.3%. On Saturday it was 12.5% while on Friday it was 13.1%.
In Los Angeles County, 16% of ICU beds are available.
Because the number of available ICU beds is so low, the state has put the Southern California region under a new Safer at Home lockdown order that started Monday at midnight. This lockdown is scheduled to last three weeks, ending on Dec. 28, but could be extended if the COVID numbers don’t come down.
Los Angeles County now has a cumulative total of 457,880 COVID-19 cases according to figures released by the LA County Department of Public Health. The county’s cumulative death toll now stands at 7,936, with 27 of those deaths coming on Monday.
With more than 3.93 million people in LA County have been tested for COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March, the test positivity rate for Monday was 11.6%. A month ago on Nov. 7, the positivity rate was 5%.

- Beverly Hills – 23 new cases for a total of 1,112 cases.
- Culver City – 16 new cases for a total of 726 cases.
- Hollywood – 30 new cases for a total of 2,174 cases.
- Melrose neighborhood – 35 new cases for a total of 3,178 cases.
- Miracle Mile – 2 new cases for a total of 334 cases.
- Park La Brea – 2 new cases for a total of 217 cases.
- Santa Monica – 40 new cases for a total of 1,694 cases.

I think we’ve all been affected by COVID-19, only 2.7% have been infected (to date).
The number is most likely much higher. Many people that have been asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic haven’t even gotten tested.
