Los Angeles County crossed another grim milestone on Friday with a cumulative total of more than 500,000 people having tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March. That means one in every 20 people in the county has had the virus at some point during the pandemic.
The county continued to set new records on Friday with the number of hospitalizations and number of new cases at all-time highs, while ICU bed availability is at an all-time low.
Los Angeles County reported 13,815 new cases on Friday, the most the county has ever recorded in a single day. The previous record of 12,819 new cases in a day was set on Thursday.
That brings the county to a cumulative total of 501,635 cases since the pandemic began in March.
Some 191 more people were hospitalized on Friday than on Thursday, with a total of 3,624 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19. That 3,624 people hospitalized is a new record for the county, beating the previous record of 3,433 set on Thursday. Of those hospitalized, 23% are in the ICU.
The 11-county Southern California region’s availability of ICU beds now stands at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday, 9% on Wednesday, 10.1% on Tuesday and 10.9% on Monday.
The county announced 50 more people dead from the coronavirus on Friday, pushing the county’s cumulative death toll to 8,199 people.
More than 4,060,000 people in LA County have been tested for COVID-19 since the pandemic began. The test positivity rate on Friday was 14.4%.
West Hollywood saw 23 new cases on Friday for a cumulative total of 1,076 cases. There were no new deaths from COVID in the city. WeHo’s cumulative death toll remains at nine deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 17 new cases for a total of 1,169 cases.
- Culver City – 28 new cases for a total of 814 cases.
- Hollywood – 57 new cases for a total of 2,361 cases.
- Melrose neighborhood – 90 new cases for a total of 3,431 cases.
- Miracle Mile – 11 new cases for a total of 363 cases.
- Park La Brea – 5 new cases for a total of 244 cases.
- Santa Monica – 42 new cases for a total of 1,825 cases.

Should we not be fearful if we run out of ICU beds? Where do you think you will go if, God forbid, you’re in a terrible car accident, have a stroke or even severe food poisoning, but the hospitals are overrun? As long as people like you continue to see data as “spreading fear” and not a wake-up call to curb reckless behavior we will continue to live in fear of a hospital bed shortage.
