Hospitalizations continue to rise on Sunday as more media outlets are now calling Los Angeles County the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, while ICU bed space remains at zero.
Each day since Dec. 1, the number of people hospitalized has broken a record that was set just one day earlier. That trend continues with the numbers released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on Sunday.
Some 125 more people were hospitalized in Los Angeles County on Sunday with a total of 5,549 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19. That sets a new record for hospitalizations in the county, beating the previous record of 5,424 which was set on Saturday.
Of those hospitalized, 21% are in the ICU. That translates to about 1,110 people in the ICU.
The 11-county Southern California region’s ICU bed availability remains at 0%. It first dropped to 0% on Thursday and has remained there ever since.
The Southern California region covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. The region has been under a state-imposed regional stay-at-home lockdown order since Dec. 7 because of the low number of ICU beds available.
Los Angeles County reported 13,315 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. That brings the county to a cumulative total of 623,670 cases since the pandemic began in March.
The county announced 58 more people dead from the coronavirus on Sunday, pushing the county’s cumulative death toll to 8,875 people.
More than 4,370,000 people have been tested for COVID-19 since the pandemic began. The positivity rate for those tested is 13%.
The Los Angeles County Public Health Department did NOT release COVID-19 information for individual cities with its daily update on Saturday. However, the health department did release that information on Sunday. As a result, the number of new cases listed below for the individual cities is for TWO days.
West Hollywood recorded 34 new cases on Sunday, for a cumulative total of 1,237 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative total remains at 10 deaths.
Below are the numbers for areas near West Hollywood. Again, the new cases are a TWO day total because of the delay in reporting from the health department:
- Beverly Hills – 40 new cases for a total of 1,361 cases and a total of 14 deaths.
- Culver City – 42 new cases for a total of 1,020 cases and a total of 38 deaths.
- Hollywood – 96 new cases total of 2,807 cases and a total of 23 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 120 new cases total of 4,119 cases and a total of 92 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 12 new cases for a total of 450 cases and a total of 6 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 12 new cases for a total of 284 cases and a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 86 new cases for a total of 2,222 cases and a total of 55 deaths.
