Los Angeles County’s death toll from COVID-19 crossed the grim 9,000 milestone on Tuesday as hospitals continued to post record numbers of coronavirus patients. All this is happening just a few days ahead of the Christmas holiday that could further exacerbate the pandemic if residents ignore protocols
“Our actions have an impact on the health and well-being of many people in our county, and not following the public health rules has deadly consequences,” said Barbara Ferrer, county Public Health Director. “The virus has spread across the entire county and everyone, employers and residents, need to be extra vigilant in their precautions to protect themselves and others.
“This is not the time to crowd at stores, to attend parties and gatherings, or to travel,” she said. “If every person can find it in themselves to celebrate the meaning of the holidays by protecting each other from the virus, we have a chance to stop the surge.”
Los Angeles County announced 88 more people dead from the coronavirus on Tuesday, pushing the county’s cumulative death toll to 9,016 people.
As of Tuesday, there are 5,866 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County. That’s 157 more people than were hospitalized on Monday. That also sets a new record for hospitalizations in the county, beating the previous record of 5,709 which was set on Monday.
Of those hospitalized, 20% are in the ICU. That translates to about 1,173 people in the ICU.
The 11-county Southern California region’s ICU bed availability remains at 0%. It first dropped to 0% on Thursday and has remained there ever since.
The Southern California region covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
The region has been under a state-imposed regional stay-at-home lockdown order since Dec. 7 because of the low number of ICU beds available. Although that lockdown order was originally scheduled to be lifted on Dec. 28, Gov. Gavin Newsom has indicated it most likely will be extended since COVID numbers keep rising.
Los Angeles County reported 12,954 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. The county now has a cumulative total of 647,542 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, some 4,425,000 people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, 14% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 21 new cases on Tuesday, for a cumulative total of 1,271 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative total remains at 10 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 28 new cases for a total of 1,403 cases and a total of 14 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 10 new cases for a total of 539 cases and a total of 23 deaths.
- Culver City – 17 new cases for a total of 1,059 cases and a total of 38 deaths.
- Hollywood – 39 new cases total of 2,891 cases and a total of 23 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 82 new cases total of 4,275 cases and a total of 92 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 14 new cases for a total of 472 cases and a total of 6 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 4 new cases for a total of 293 cases and a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 35 new cases for a total of 2,289 cases and a total of 56 deaths.
