More than one in every 15 people in Los Angeles County has had COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March. That startling figure was revealed on Thursday, another day where the number of people hospitalized and the number of new deaths reached all time highs.
Los Angeles County reported 13,678 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The county now has a cumulative total of 677,299 cases since the pandemic began in March.
That 677,2999 total cases means that of the county’s 10 million residents, one in every 15 has had the virus.
That’s NOT to say that one in every 15 people is currently infectious. The health department estimates one in every 80 people is currently infectious, whether they are experiencing symptoms or now.
However, the one in every 15 figure does offer an idea of how widespread this virus has become in less than a year.
As of Thursday, there are 6,499 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County. That’s 344 more people than were hospitalized on Wednesday. That also sets a new record for hospitalizations in the county, beating the previous record of 6,155 which was set on Wednesday.
Of those hospitalized, 20% are in the ICU. That translates to about 1,300 people in the ICU.
The 11-county Southern California region’s ICU bed availability remains at 0%. It first dropped to 0% on Dec. 17 and has remained there ever since.
County health officials announced 148 more people dead from the coronavirus on Thursday, pushing the county’s cumulative death toll to 9,299 people.
To date, some 4.5 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an average of 14% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 23 new cases on Thursday, for a cumulative total of 1,308 cases since the pandemic began. The city had one new death for a cumulative total of 11 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 19 new cases for a total of 1,459 cases and a total of 14 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 11 new cases for a total of 555 cases and a total of 25 deaths.
- Culver City – 25 new cases for a total of 1,104 cases and a total of 38 deaths.
- Hollywood – 40 new cases total of 2,980 cases and 1 new death for a total of 24 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 66 new cases total of 4,425 cases and a total of 94 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 10 new cases for a total of 488 cases and a total of 6 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 8 new cases for a total of 308 cases and a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 56 new cases for a total of 2,404 cases and a total of 57 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
