LA County Surpasses 900,000 Total COVID-19 Cases and 12,000 Total Deaths on Saturday

The post-holiday COVID-19 surge that health officials warned of seems to be underway, as Los Angeles County recorded nearly 17,000 new cases on Saturday.

With Saturday’s numbers, the county crossed two major milestones — more than 900,000 people have been diagnosed with the disease, and more than 12,000 have died. However, hospitalizations are down slightly, for now.

LA County reported 16,982 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday. The county now has a cumulative total of  906,171 cases since the pandemic began in March.

County health officials announced 221 more people dead from the coronavirus on Saturday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 12,084 people.

There are 7,966 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Saturday. That’s 108 fewer people than were hospitalized on Friday when there were 8,074  people hospitalized.  

Of those hospitalized, 22% are in the ICU. That translates to about 1,600 people in the ICU.

To date, more than 4.96 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 17% are testing positive.   

West Hollywood recorded 26 new cases on Saturday, for a cumulative total of 1,618 cases since the pandemic began. The city had one new death; the cumulative death total is now 18 deaths.

Below are the numbers for areas near West Hollywood:

  • Beverly Hills – 37 new cases for a total of 1,885 cases and 1 new death for a total of 16 deaths.
  • Carthay neighborhood – 7 new cases for a total of 699 cases and no new deaths for a total of 32 deaths.
  • Culver City – 33 new cases for a total of 1,513 cases and no new deaths for a total of 47 deaths.
  • Hollywood – 87 new cases for a total of 3,822 cases and no new death for a total of 36 deaths.
  • Melrose neighborhood – 106 new cases total of 5,831 cases and 2 new deaths for a total of 120 deaths.
  • Miracle Mile – 17 new cases for a total of 641 cases and 1 new death for a total of 8 deaths.
  • Park La Brea – 7 new cases for a total of 419 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
  • Santa Monica – 51 new cases for a total of 3,161 cases and 3 new deaths for a total of 87 deaths.

The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border. 

The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
