LA County COVID Hospitalizations Down Slightly on Sunday, but New Cases and Deaths Still Rising Sharply

COVID-related hospitalizations in Los Angeles County are down slightly for the second day on Sunday. However the number of new cases and deaths remains high and is expected to keep growing as the post-holiday surge gets underway.  

There are 7,964  people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Sunday. That’s two fewer people than were hospitalized on Saturday when there were 7,966  people hospitalized.

It is also the second day in a row of decreased number of people hospitalized. However, health officials expect hospitalizations to start rising again soon as more people who were infected over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays begin to get sick.

Of those hospitalized, 22% are in the ICU. That translates to about 1,600 people in the ICU. 

LA County reported 14,482 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. The county now has a cumulative total of  920,177 cases since the pandemic began in March.

County health officials announced 166 more people dead from the coronavirus on Sunday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 12,250 people.

To date, about 5 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 17% are testing positive.   

West Hollywood recorded six new cases, for a cumulative total of 1,624 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 18 deaths.

Below are the numbers for areas near West Hollywood:

  • Beverly Hills – 18 new cases for a total of 1,903 cases and no new deaths for a total of 16 deaths.
  • Carthay neighborhood – 3 new cases for a total of 702 cases and no new deaths for a total of 32 deaths.
  • Culver City – 30 new cases for a total of 1,543 cases and 3 new deaths for a total of 50 deaths.
  • Hollywood – 58 new cases for a total of 3,880 cases and no new deaths for a total of 36 deaths.
  • Melrose neighborhood – 83 new cases total of 5,914 cases and 1 new death for a total of 121 deaths.
  • Miracle Mile – 8 new cases for a total of 649 cases and no new deaths for a total of 8 deaths.
  • Park La Brea – 5 new cases for a total of 424 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
  • Santa Monica – 44 new cases for a total of 3,205 cases and 1 new death for a total of 88 deaths.

The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border. 

The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
