With COVID deaths hitting near record levels on Tuesday, Los Angeles County is now experiencing one COVID death every six minutes.
County health officials announced 288 more people dead from the coronavirus on Tuesday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 12,674 people.
That 288 people dead is the third highest number of coronavirus deaths in a single day the county has ever recorded. The highest was 318 deaths recorded on Jan. 8; the second highest was 290 recorded on Dec. 31.
According to the county Department of Public Health, more than 1,600 people died from the virus in the county over the past seven days, an average of about 230 per day. That equates to one death roughly every six minutes.
There are 7,926 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Tuesday. That’s 16 more people than were hospitalized on Monday when there were 7,910 people hospitalized. The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
The state reported that LA County hospitals have 1,725 COVID patients in the ICU on Tuesday, roughly 22% of all the county’s hospitalized COVID patients.
LA County reported 11,994 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. The county now has a cumulative total of 944,319 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, about 5.05 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 18% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 13 new cases, for a cumulative total of 1,651 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total remains at 18 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 19 new cases for a total of 1,941 cases and 1 new death for a total of 18 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 8 new cases for a total of 713 cases and 1 new death for a total of 33 deaths.
- Culver City – 23 new cases for a total of 1,582 cases and 1 new death for a total of 51 deaths.
- Hollywood – 41 new cases for a total of 3,974 cases and no new deaths for a total of 36 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 84 new cases total of 6,087 cases and 4 new deaths for a total of 127 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 4 new cases for a total of 663 cases and no new deaths for a total of 7 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 5 new cases for a total of 437 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 52 new cases for a total of 3,310 cases and 2 new deaths for a total of 90 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
