Hospitalizations Down A Bit, but Deaths and New Cases at Near Record Levels on Thursday

COVID hospitalizations in Los Angeles County are down slightly on Thursday, but new cases and deaths are still at near record levels, suggesting this surge of the coronavirus is anything but over.

There are 7,906  people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Thursday. That’s 43 fewer people than were hospitalized on Wednesday when there were 7,949  people hospitalized.

The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred a week ago on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098  people hospitalized.

The state reported that LA County hospitals have 1,677 COVID patients in the ICU on Thursday, roughly 21% of all the county’s hospitalized COVID patients.

LA County reported 17,323  new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The county now has a cumulative total of  975,299  cases since the pandemic began in March.

County health officials announced 287 more people dead from the coronavirus on Thursday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 13,234  people.

That 287 people dead is the fourth highest number of coronavirus deaths in a single day the county has ever recorded. The highest was 318 deaths recorded on Jan. 8; the second highest was 290 recorded on Dec. 31; the third was 288 recorded on Tuesday.

To date, about 5.12 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 18% are testing positive.   

West Hollywood recorded 18 new cases, for a cumulative total of 1,690 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total remains at 18 deaths.

Below are the numbers for areas near West Hollywood:

  • Beverly Hills – 33 new cases for a total of 1,998 cases and no new deaths for a total of 19 deaths.
  • Carthay neighborhood – 19 new cases for a total of 740 cases and no new deaths for a total of 33 deaths.
  • Culver City – 35 new cases for a total of 1,636 cases and 2 new deaths for a total of 55 deaths.
  • Hollywood – 98 new cases for a total of 4,118 cases and 1 new death for a total of 37 deaths.
  • Melrose neighborhood – 114 new cases total of 6,293 cases and 2 new deaths for a total of 133 deaths.
  • Miracle Mile – 15 new cases for a total of 686 cases and no new deaths for a total of 7 deaths.
  • Park La Brea – 8 new case for a total of 446 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
  • Santa Monica – 84 new cases for a total of 3,419 cases and 3 new deaths for a total of 94 deaths.

The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border. 

The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
