Los Angeles County crossed the one million cumulative COVID cases threshold on Saturday, meaning that in this county of 10 million people, one in every ten people have had COVID since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, the more contagious United Kingdom variant of the virus has now been detected in LA County.
The one out of every ten people having had the virus is not to say that one in ten people are currently contagious. The CDC says people only remain contagious for a few weeks. However, one in ten people having the virus does indicate how widespread it has become.
The county’s public health department also confirmed the first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the same variant discovered in the United Kingdom. This more contagious variant was found in a man who recently spent time in Los Angeles County before traveling to Oregon, where he is currently isolating.
Although it is the first confirmed case of the variant in Los Angeles County, public health officials here believe that the new, more contagious strain is already spreading in the community, and are continuing to test samples.
LA County reported 14,669 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,003,923 cases since the pandemic began in March.

The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
Approximately 1,560 people are in the ICU, roughly 22% of all the county’s hospitalized COVID patients.
