COVID deaths remain high on Wednesday, while the number of new cases and people hospitalized in Los Angeles County continues to decline, but health officials say it’s still too soon to determine if the latest surge is over.

The persistently high number of daily deaths in recent weeks is a result of the massive spike in hospitalizations the county experienced over the past two months. Deaths are always the last to decline after a surge.

County health officials announced 262 more COVID-related deaths on Wednesday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 14,384 people.

The highest number of deaths in a single day was 318 deaths, which was recorded on Jan. 8.

There are 7,253 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Wednesday. That’s 69 fewer people than were hospitalized on Tuesday when there were 7,322 people hospitalized.

The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098  people hospitalized.

According to the state, there are currently 1,692 people are in the ICU with COVID in LA County.

LA County reported 6,492  new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. The county now has a cumulative total of  1,038,092 cases since the pandemic began in March.

To date, about 5.28 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 19% are testing positive.

Health officials urged people trying to make appointments for COVID vaccines to remain patient. The website to make appointments crashed for several hours Tuesday after the county announced that people aged 65 and over can be vaccinated.

The website — vaccinatelacounty.com — is running again, but due to limited vaccine supplies, available appointments are limited.

The county has also expanded the capacity of its call-in reservation system, which is available from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 833-540-0473. Officials urged residents to use the call system only if they are unable to make appointments through the website.
