West Hollywood’s Standard Hotel is shutting its doors for good on Friday.
The trendy hotel at 8300 Sunset Blvd. announced its closing on Instagram Thursday afternoon, explaining that it was “unable to prevent a significant increase to its lease, which makes operating the property impossible.”
The Los Angeles Times reported The Standard’s lease is held by the Ferrado Group, a real estate investment firm based in Spain with a location in Newport Beach.
The hotel first opened in 1999 under the guidance of hotelier Andre Balazs. It has since grown into a chain of boutique hotels with six locations including downtown Los Angeles, Miami, New York and London.
Los Angeles historian Alison Martino reports the building opened in 1962 as the Thunderbird Hotel, then later changed its name to the Hollywood Sunset Hotel. In the 1970s, it became a retirement home called the Golden Crest and continued to be a retirement home until Balazs opened the Standard.
Below is the full text of the Standard’s Instagram posting announcing the closing:
“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the closure of The Standard, Hollywood, which will shut its doors indefinitely on Friday, January 22nd. Despite 22 years of unconditional love for our hotel, our guests, our team and our community, the hotel was unable to prevent a significant increase to its lease, which makes operating the property impossible.
Alive with personality & personalities, and the backdrop of countless legendary tales, Hollywood was the birthplace of The Standard’s culture. It came to life through its timeless design, live music performances at Desert Nights, blue Astroturf pool scene, living art in ‘The Box,’ and the many late, hazy nights at our nightclub incarnations: Purple Lounge, Mmhmmm and Giorgio’s. While there are and will be more Standard hotels, there will never be another Standard, Hollywood. And though it is painful to say goodbye, we know that the community we inspired will live on.
