COVID deaths in Los Angeles County on Sunday are down significantly after four straight days of 250+ deaths. However, it’s unclear whether this is the beginning of a downward trend in deaths or just a result of weekend delays in reporting.
Meanwhile, new cases and hospitalizations continue to be on the steady decline which began more than a week ago, indicating that the most recent surge has peaked.
County health officials announced 98 more COVID-related deaths on Sunday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 15,260 people.
The highest number of deaths in a single day was 318 deaths, which was recorded on Jan. 8.
There are 6,697 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Sunday. That’s 184 fewer people than were hospitalized on Saturday when there were 6,881 people hospitalized.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
Some 24% of those hospitalized are in the ICU, approximately 1,660 people.
LA County reported 8,243 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,073,111 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, more than 5.38 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 19% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 15 new cases for a cumulative total of 1,850 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 23 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 12 new cases for a total of 2,152 cases and no new deaths for a total of 20 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 3 new cases for a total of 804 cases and no new deaths for a total of 40 deaths.
- Culver City – 17 new cases for a total of 1,835 cases and 1 new death for a total of 66 deaths.
- Hollywood – 62 new cases for a total of 4,575 cases and no new deaths for a total of 46 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 55 new cases total of 6,936 cases and no new deaths for a total of 152 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 5 new cases for a total of 765 cases and no new deaths for a total of 9 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 2 new cases for a total of 485 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 23 new cases for a total of 3,779 cases and 1 new death for a total of 108 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
