Tuesday marks the one year anniversary of the first COVID case being diagnosed in Los Angeles County. Now, a year later, the county is fast approaching 1.1 million cumulative cases and 16,000 deaths.
After two days of low numbers, COVID deaths in Los Angeles shot back up to record highs on Tuesday. Officials had warned the low death numbers on Sunday and Monday were merely a lag in reporting over the weekend and that proved to be true.
County health officials announced 291 more COVID-related deaths on Tuesday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 15,592 people.
Tuesday’s 291 deaths is the second highest number of COVID deaths in a single day the county has ever recorded. The highest number of deaths in a single day was 318 deaths, which was recorded on Jan. 8.
There are 6,307 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Tuesday. That’s 179 fewer people than were hospitalized on Monday when there were 6,486 people hospitalized.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
The state reported there are 1,551 people in the ICU.
LA County reported 5,927 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,085,044 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, more than 5.41 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 19% are testing positive, although the positivity rate for Tuesday was 12%.
West Hollywood recorded 10 new cases for a cumulative total of 1,874 cases since the pandemic began. The city had one new death; the cumulative death total is 24 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 13 new cases for a total of 2,181 cases and 1 new death for a total of 21 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 2 new cases for a total of 807 cases and 1 new death for a total of 41 deaths.
- Culver City – 16 new cases for a total of 1,861 cases and no new deaths for a total of 66 deaths.
- Hollywood – 24 new cases for a total of 4,640 cases and 1 new death for a total of 47 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 34 new cases total of 7,006 cases and 1 new death for a total of 154 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 10 new cases for a total of 781 cases and 1 new death for a total of 10 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 7 new cases for a total of 494 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 21 new cases for a total of 3,815 cases and 1 new death for a total of 109 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
