New COVID cases in Los Angeles County topped 2,000 for the second day in a row after two weeks of numbers far below that. This disturbing trend could be an indication of another surge coming.
Meanwhile, 24% of residents have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, while 8% have received both doses. County health officials report 2,415,000 doses of vaccine have been administered across the county. Of those vaccinated, 814,593 people have received second doses.
Next week, the county will receive its largest vaccine shipment to date. Dr. Paul Simon, the county Department of Public Health’s chief science officer, said the county will be receiving 312,000 doses of vaccine next week, including 53,700 doses of the newly authorized single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Of the allotment, 62% will be used for first doses, reversing a recent trend of most shots being reserved for people in need of their second dose.
LA County reported 2,110 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,200,120 cases since the pandemic began in March.
There are 1,341 people currently in the hospital in Los Angeles County according to county health officials. That’s 60 fewer people in the hospital than on Thursday when there were 1,401 people hospitalized.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
There are approximately 430 people currently in the ICU. The county’s total ICU capacity is about 2,500 beds.
County health officials announced 144 more COVID-related deaths on Friday. The cumulative death toll in LA County is 21,910 people.
The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day occurred on Jan. 8 with 318 deaths. The second highest occurred on Jan. 30 with 316 deaths.
To date, almost 5.87 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. The daily positivity rate on Thursday was 2.3%.
West Hollywood recorded no new cases; the cumulative total is 2,140 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 34 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 12 new cases for a total of 2,498 cases and 32 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 3 new cases for a total of 868 cases and 60 deaths.
- Century City – 1 new case for a total of 569 cases and 11 deaths.
- Culver City – 3 new cases for a total of 2,100 cases and 92 deaths.
- Hollywood – 16 new cases for a total of 5,227 cases and 65 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 18 new cases total of 7,851 cases and 198 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 4 new cases for a total of 908 cases and 16 deaths.
- Park La Brea – no new cases for a total of 570 cases and 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 19 new cases for a total of 4,378 cases and 151 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
