Multimedia artist Carl Hopgood wants to memorialize WeHo’s gay hotspots of yore that were casualties of the coronavirus pandemic — The Standard Hotel, Gold Coast, etc. — and he wants you to help pay for it.
What does he have in mind?
A “multimedia public art sculpture combining sound and neon” affixed to the facade of the former Circus of Books (now Chi Chi LaRue’s) on Santa Monica Blvd.
“The names of the iconic gay places we lost will be created in glowing neon lights seemingly falling from the sky from white neon clouds,” Hopgood says.
And what’s the price tag? $100,000.
Hopgood is currently soliciting donations on a Kickstarter page. He has received nearly $3,000 toward his goal with six days left in the fundraiser.

One of those iconic places was in Studio City, another closed prior to the pandemic, and two others have not declared themselves permanently closed.
An utter waste of money. So many people are suffering and need help. This project is absurd and the fundraising effort deserves to fail.
Where are the bylines? WHo fact checks this stuff.?
“All the News that is Fit to Print” was taken seriously not too long ago. That was when journalism was held in high regard with the exception of the smut peddlers. Currently folks without a smidgeon of integrity, seem to be chasing notoriety and/or clicks.

I hope we have not seen the end of Marix but $100,000 seems like a bit much when we still have long lines of people a food distribution sites across Los Angeles and the rest of the United States. If you got an extra hundred dollars maybe giving it to the hungry would be money better spent than bemoaning our local sense of victim-hood.

Perhaps a bit of research before blowing the neon. Cafe d’ Etoile was not a casualty of COVID-19; alas it was a casualty of love gone wrong. It closed mid-September 2019. I still miss my Friday afternoons there.
