The Abbey is officially saying goodbye to twinkhood.
The “Best Gay Bar in the World” is celebrating its 30th anniversary today with some major festivities starting at 11 a.m.
What began as a humble coffee shop in 1991 is now a veritable mecca of gay nightlife, as well as a safe space for the LGBTQ community and its allies.
Owner David Cooley recently sat down with WEHOville to talk about the future of The Abbey and WeHo’s Rainbow District. After three challenging decades, he’s ready to raise a glass to the success of his establishment and his staff.
Cooley will kick off the party at 11 a.m. with a speech and a toast, followed by a special presentation/drag brunch hosted by Jonnie Reinhart featuring performances by RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 Mariah Paris Balenciaga.
The show will closing with a jazz ensemble set.
Possible celebrity guests include Calvin Klein, Kevin Huvane, David Furnish and Elton John, Diana Ross, Lance Bass & Michael Turchin, Lisa Vanderpump & Ken Todd, Verdine White (Earth Wind & Fire), MJ Rodriguez.

The Abbey ceased being a traditional gay bar many, many years ago. To call it a gay bar now is a decided misnomer. Younger generations have no clue that when you went to a gay bar, there were only men present and we were all on the same page, so to speak. No longer. Eventually, WeHo will cease being a gay enclave as we are assimilated into the mainstream, whatever that may mean. We have become the victims of our own success, ignited by Stonewall and propelled by AIDS in the 80s.
Yes. the Abbey is as much a gay bar as McDonald’s is a health food buffet. David had the best of intentions – just forgot human nature i.e. take over rather than come join us.
