West Hollywood City Council will receive an update from staff on Monday regarding the dockless mobility pilot program which allowed electric scooters and bikes onto city streets beginning last month.
The program has been highly popular, with a total of 25,507 trips logged since it began July 1. On average, there are 823 trips taken daily on the devices.
The report notes that only 67 complaints have been received — a mere 0.26% of total rides — and that more than half have come from the same seven sources. Only one injury was reported.
City staff will recommend additional community engagement to city council, as well as new street signage to help riders understand the rules and more places to park the electric vehicles. There are currently 11 official parking stations throughout the city, and 14 more are planned for construction. Parking is also allowed in the furniture zone between the walkway and curb anywhere in the city.
Constituents have several ways to report a complaint, via the city’s website, the city App., by calling 213-247-7720 or by emailing to [email protected].
Translation: the number of people that took the time to complain and “send an email to city hall” most people think about it or say I’ll do it later then never do. Until someone on the sidewalk gets knocked over bad enough where they break a limb or shatter their face or teeth nothing much will change, etc.
Scooters are a decided danger. I was almost hit three times in the last couple of weeks. You can’t hear them coming from behind you. A one step to the right or left could mean a serious knockdown to the sidewalk, life threatening injury or death. Is that what it will take to invoke a ban? It’s time for the commenters on this website to finally realize that you don’t represent the majority of West Hollywood residents. You complain constantly on these articles but you’re in the minority.

It sounds like the city Council is going to do whatever the hell it wants and is trying to rationalize it with numbers that mean nothing! I agree with the commenters who said most people will not fill out a complaint, or they don’t know how!
One injury has been reported, but how many people were shaken up, upset, and scared by near misses?
So what if 25,000 people rode the scooters. That doesn’t make it good. 75 million people voted for Trump, and that didn’t make it good either! All we have now is trouble
I always question the Data, when Staff finds it inconvenient.
I saw a guy riding a scooter on the street (without a helmet) but he was blocking traffic! We were all forced to go his speed. When we all came to a stop light he was able to move to the front of all the cars that were ahead of us and was then able to slow down even more cars.
Scooters on the sidewalk are dangerous to pedestrians, and on the street are a big annoyance to drivers.
So this person was following the law like so many on Wehoville want and you still have a problem with it?

Completely misleading. Who knew where or how one could file a complaint. I’m now backlogging my daily complaints from the past two years right here, right now. So add at least 700 complaints from me alone!
This is a completely dumb marker of the severity of the problem of ill-mannered use of these devices. I have no problem with the devices as intended, and every issue with the way they are used and abused. We live in a country that protects the rights of the minority over the tyranny of the majority. Those 67 complaints should not be dismissed as “only” but rather as voices of people who were pissed off enough to actually find a way to complain in a bureaucracy that doesn’t value public input. What could does it do to lodge complaints to a tone deaf city hall??? They’re going to do what they want to do regardless of what the resident want, or don’t want.
I don’t think the actual number of complaints is an accurate reflection of the public’s displeasure with these things. People are annoyed when riders dump them blocking the sidewalk and the idiots that ride the actual scooters on the sidewalk but like everything else, we’re getting immune to all the inconsiderate, obvious people and we don’t take the time out of our day when we know the city council will dismiss us and do what they want anyway.
To whom do we file a complaint and what is their number?
Although I have no confidence at all that my complaint will make one bit of difference because the City Council won’t care, I will at least get on their nerves.
Check the WeHo City website. At the least, Code Compliance should be receptive.
Code compliance has been woefully understaffed for decades. Think citing leaf blower violators.
Code Compliance handled the problem of my neighbor’s constantly barking dog efficiently and quickly. Maybe I just got lucky, but it’s a good start. Beats whining.
