GYM Sportsbar returns to the Rainbow District tonight, opening its door at a new location after more than a year.

The popular gay sports-themed bar had been shuttered since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Now, GYM Sportsbar occupies the space where Halal Guys was, at 8919 Santa Monica Blvd., on the corner of Hilldale and Santa Monica.

Doors open at 9 p.m.

Geezer, how many sports themed bars do they need within three blocks? Next, it’s going to be renamed from Boys Town to Jocks Town.

So…. anyway, can we just refocus on the fact that a Gay owned and operated business fought the odds and with great support is starting a whole new chapter? Let’s rejoice that we have a fabulous new place to hang out with our friends and potentially meet a hot new future date.

Totally agree. I think they will do even better business in this new location!

Focus on the positive of this story. A business has opened in West Hollywood after being forced out by their greedy landlord and followed by the pandemic.

Thank you to the owners of the bar for brining jobs back to the community.

The new place looks wonderful and the venue has never looked better.

Welcome back home!

Nice! Looking forward to going soon. WHAT is going on with Motherlode still being closed? Are they remodeling the entire interior? Whatever it is, why it wasn’t done while bars were forced to be shut down is the question.

I find it curious that we now refer to that area as the “Rainbow District” while simultaneously rejecting the once all-inclusive rainbow flag as not sufficiently inclusive to represent a small handful of the many dozens of flags that now try to find space on flagpoles in our tiny hamlet. I am an exhausted pragmatic progressive trying to keep up with the war of words of what is woke.

It’s difficult to support the oppressed while trying to placate the powerful oppressor but, when one rejects the oppressor and their values in favor of the oppressed; it becomes easy ☭ ❗

Do you realize you’re an Oppressor yourself? I seriously doubt you do. So in simple terms for a simple mind: you want to oppress the Oppressor, so by oppressing the Oppressor you’re an Oppressor yourself.

I wouldn’t expect a white male boomer to understand why certain groups want to be recognized with their own flag. Too often we have seen POC, trans, bi and others left out of the conversation when talking about “LGBT issues”.

If I was a bad person, I’d complain about trans and bi flags on an article about a cherished neighborhood LGBT bar reopening.

Read, dear. II did not complain about the trans and bi flags. Your disconnect is concerning. My comment is about the use of the word rainbow in what is now called the Rainbow District (apparently?) And by the way, by your own definition, who is now welcome in what you just referred to as an LGBT bar? Let’s have some messaging consistency, because by your own words, you’ve now made people feel left out at this cherished neighborhood bar.

all labels are prejudicial and perjorative, boomer can be as offensive as the F or N word, as the intention is to diminish experiences

Also curious that those who scream the loudest are also the ones who engage in attempts to be equally offensive and dismissive with their ageism–an ism that clearly finds a comfortable home in some otherwise woke circles. Clearly greenie missed my point, as they often do. I celebrate inclusivity, that’s what I love about the rainbow flag. The comment says that trans and bi feel left out when talking about LGBT issues….wondering if the BT in LGBT now mean something other than bi and trans. Still wondering why asexuals, pansexuals, polysexuals, demisexuals, and others are excluded from the new flag,… Read more »

Yes dear, do they not teach ageism sensitivity in gender studies Ph.D. programs? Or, are you just too entitled to care, and too full of entitlement to reveal your identity for full civil discourse? Your sarcasm and dismissiveness are boring and unworthy of engagement, but here I am again, kicking myself in the entrails for doing so.

Good to know that you think anyone who cares about the plight of others is just someone with a gender studies degree. Please educate yourself…this isn’t the 80’s anymore.

I wasn’t referring to just anyone, I was referring to you. Yet, you deflect, deny and divert from your own ageism and inconsistent identity labeling. One should not assume that those of us who care about the plight of others are simultaneously unable to see through the intolerance of debate by repetitive sound bite and sophomoric insult combined with often infantilizing hashtags and memes. For every Robin DiAngelo, there’s a John McWhorter.

No, you were referring to the “woke” crowd that you bitch and whine about in almost every comment.

I wish you cared about racism as much as you are offended by someone saying boomer- a word that became more popularized because of internet memes a few years ago lol.

Alan, you need to lighten up.

No, really, I was referring to you, hiding behind the cloak of anonymity and all. Play armchair shrink all you want, I know what’s in my heart and in my words. Spin, deflect, divert, deny and hide. You’re quite good at it. Stop performing in disguise, unmask and have a beer at Gym, debate like an adult. Own your ageism. Have some cajones.

“a word that became more popularized because of internet memes a few years ago lol.” Dude just acknowledged that his intellectual North Star is granting legitimacy to random internet memes. We could go in so may directions with this, but if “I saw it on the internet” informs their debate, I think we’re done here. LOLZ

Some new info for you: our government protects people over 40 from employment discrimination by including them as a protected class. This is because our government recognizes that some people’s opinions, thoughts and feelings are dismissed, just because of their age. So, yes, you should consider “boomer” a slur.

While I get Alan’s frustration as the pretentious “woke” mindset seems increasingly tedious and self righteous. But we have to keep in mind that change and re-invention is an inevitable part of a generational transition. Rather than stagnant, re-invention, even if it may seem like contrived change for change’s sake, is necessary to keep the movement fresh, inclusive and dynamic.

Becoming an adult means you have accepted that sometimes you just have to play the hand you were dealt and move on without expecting the rest of the world to adjust to your particular niche and fly your flag. Accept that nobody cares about whatever it is that makes you a little out of the mainstream, and insisting that they acknowledge that in you is, frankly, annoying. Just be a good and kind person, do your job well and, for the most part, life will be good for you. As for the people who still don’t like you … welcome… Read more »
