Sheriff’s Department talks rising crime, Cookies in monthly report

Lt. Bill Moulder with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department gave his monthly update to WeHo’s Public Safety Commission this week.

August 2021 saw a 64 percent increase in Part One crimes compared with August 2020, he said, while reminding the commission that 2020 had some of the lowest crime rates on record due to the pandemic, and the sharp increase should not be cause for concern. August 2020, after all, had about 30 percent fewer Part One Crimes than August 2019.

Part One crime in August 2021, compared with August 2019

  • Total Part One crimes were up 64 percent, with 177 incidents
  • West side was up 49 percent
  • City center was up 56 and
  • East side was up 113 percent
  • West side had 44 percent of the part one crimes
  • City Center had 28 percent
  • East side had 28 percent

There were 10 armed robberies in West Hollywood during August, three of which were “estes” robberies, such as “when somebody goes in and they’re committing a theft in a store and as they’re leaving they get in a fight with security or employees, which elevates the crime,” Moulder explained.

There were 34 burglaries, including:

  • 14 commercial burglaries
  • 9 in sub garages
  • 10 in mail rooms
  • 1 in a vacant house

Moulder also addressed the ongoing situation with marijuana dispensary Cookies, describing an incident in August in which an alleged Cookie’s customer parked illegally on Kings Road and then “used the street as a restroom,” he said.

A representative with Cookies addressed the incident in her public comment.

“I wanted to thank Lt. Moulder and his staff for partnering with us to continue to become not just a good neighbor but the best neighbor possible to the surrounding community,” she said.

The representative detailed how Cookies had reviewed two sets of security camera footages as well as photos provided by Lt. Moulder and had not been able to match the suspect with any customer who had been in the store.

“That said, we continue to welcome any feedback and comments,” she said. “Cookies has a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week patrol car which patrols a four-block radius surrounding Cookies as well as a full-time cleaning team that operates during all operating hours that also extends a four-block radius around the store. Please feel free to reach out to us.”

Public Safety Chairperson Tory Berger was happy with the effort made by Cookies to rectify the issue.

“That really shows something, and that’s a great start that we can continue working and communicating with you,” he said.

The crime statistics are garbage. My home was broken into multiple times during this period. I filed seven complaints and only one “investigation” was provided to me. However, this “investigation” did not include a statement from me (just notes from the complaint) or inquiry into the identified, suspected perpetrator. I wonder if the (now) two perpetrators’ roles in the Long Beach City and LA County Sheriff’s office respectively played a part in this oversight? My car was also later stolen, identity stolen, and with the cooperation of some employees at a Santa Monica Blvd (unnamed) bank branch, my bank account… Read more »

Crime statistics are not always applicable to individual situations. Crime statistics are important in determining whether law enforcement initiatives and policies created to decrease crime are effective or need changing. You might be better served just getting Home Owner and Auto Insurance and, if you file a police report, you might not be responsible for the loss that resulted from your identity theft ❗

Unfortunately I am being denied all law enforcement services by the Sheriff’s Department. I have six missing adult family members. I am being denied missing persons reports. My family members’ homes appeared as sold on Realtor.com. Images show the furniture gone but the clothing is in the closets. Phones are disconnected, social sites disconnected, mail returned, a relative was spoofed, email impersonated. This has been going on since November 2021. Nobody will help me!!! There are other Jewish families in this situation in town. I have been in Southern CA since 2010 and was involved in 12/steps, dodgeball, and the… Read more »

Attract druggies, expect crime.
Same thing happened with Eddie Nash’s Odessey1 on Beverly Blvd. back in the ‘late 70s, when Nash was running lots of coke and pills thtough there, just like he did at the Sugar Shack in the valley, Paradise Ballroom on Highland, etc. etc. ad nauseum. You want Cookies? You get potheads peeing on your roses. That’s what they do.

People who are outraged by someone parking illegally and peeing on a street outside West Hollywood, near a business in Los Angeles, need to get over their privilege and try using a map. If I were Cookies, I would tell y’all to get a grip on your privilege.

West Hollywood is such a cesspool. Total Part One crimes up an ungodly amount and here it’s residents in these comments are talking about gender, racial, and “woke” issues. Meanwhile, an ad to the right conflates “pride” with wearing “gym wear” and “be sexy”. Unbelievably Orwellian. It’s all over for you. You don’t know what you don’t know. They will keep dominating you until there is nothing else to dominate. Judging by the vacant, vacuous, and vapid comments herein, perhaps that’s already happened.

There is always ’cause and effect.’ The real question is are you willing to look at reality at the expense of your political views.

All your reported experts are progressive organizations with biased agendas. In my opinion they are no better than the terrorist group (non)BLM and the politicians they endorse. So bring on less non biased news organizations like CNN or MSNBC.

Cookies is a filthy blight on West Hollywood. Kick them out. No matter how many hired cops they have. Move Cookies to Compton. WeHo Residents Lives Mattters too. Who really cares anymore? The cops or the totally corrupt elected officials in West Hollywood! I’m half Latino and we’re totally neglected. Tv, Commercials, movies, is all black and white. Talk about racism. Talk about the second largest minority in the United States. Just look at the Oscars and you’ll see it. Every year there’s a major Latino star complaining. And Hollywood always puts us at the back of the bus. No… Read more »

The world according to Lt. Bill Moulder with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, an alleged Cookie’s customer (a dangerous minority no doubt) parked illegally (Karens do this routinely) on Kings Road and then urinates on the road, CRIME WAVE- STOP THE PRESSES ❗ What about the LASD Gangs that deputies belong to including full on white supremacist and the crimes they commit ❓ Consider that the Sheriff has ALL the Legal authority to easily end the problem and, the practical means to replace problem deputies.

It’s obvious crime is up when you have three people on Melrose being held up at lunch time. And the whole thing goes viral. I have no idea why anyone would want to visit this area. They must be total masochists.

We should be grateful we’re not downtown Portland with a group of lunatic homeless camped out right in front of all the gay bars killing all the business. And the SHE Shyne, Horvath and Dr Erica group defending it … blabbering on like little busy bodies talking about Woke bullsh—-t!

Any business that requires a security patrol and cleaning team operating 24 hours a day around a 4 block radius from its store is a business that doesn’t belong there.

I agree. There are other dispensaries that don’t seem to have this issue or the have the continual problems that seem to arise here. It is located in Los Angeles and obviously they don’t care about this sort of thing like West Hollywood might.

If something goes down by 30% and then up by 64% that’s still an overall increase of 14.8% from the baseline. Sorry, Lt. Moulder, but that IS cause for concern and should not be dismissed.

Cy Husain

Reply to  Alan Strasburg

Also we need more verifiable data data points to establish a reliable baseline. When this is done we find 80% of California’s cities showed declines in crime from 2010 through 2020. The Sheriff’s Department gets a-lot wrong❗

Absolutely. No excuse. Anyone living here fir twenty plus years has seen the changes and crime stats. The Lieutenant is mistaken in his application of the facts. Several robberies on Melrose. Whether it’s within or close to city limits is irrelevant. Crime is up not down

Cy Husain

Keep in mind that many times hate crimes can escalate when overall crime is down ❗
