City Councilmembers John D’Amico and Lindsey Horvath made adjournments during council’s meeting on Monday in honor of two writers beloved in West Hollywood, Eve Babitz (above left) and Anne Rice, who both passed away this month.
Eve Babitz by John D’Amico
I’d like to adjourn in memory of writer Eve Babitz. She was famous in the ‘60s and ‘70s for her critique of Hollywood and everything Los Angeles. She was sort of a version of Joan Didion and she lived in our own city. When I campaigned my first time, I met her and we had a really amazing sort of chit chat in her home. And I just wanted to read a couple of quotes of eve’s that I thought might capture her spirit and her memory.
She wrote in “Black Swans: A Collection of Stories”: “Hollywood, after all, is the home of those whom silent star May Murray called the self-enchanted, and having grown up in Hollywood I’ve known a lot of self-enchanted people. Not since the pharaohs thought they were gods have so many human beings believed that they themselves and not their publicists or destiny or some larger force were responsible for the fact that so many other human beings worshipped them.”
She also wrote, “We live in a world where whoever sedates us with the most glamour and captures our imaginations with the greatest intensity becomes history.”
So Eve, your words about our Los Angeles and our West Hollywood are much appreciated, and may your memory be a blessing.
Anne Rice by Lindsey Horvath
This evening I’d first like to adjourn in memory of Anne Rice, who is an American author best known for her series of gothic novels, “The Vampire Chronicles.”
Her first novel “Interview with the Vampire” became a best seller in 1976 and kicked off the Chronicles series. The success of her books over 40 novels is widely credited with fueling a revival of interest in all things vampiric, which has been reflected on the big and small screens. Her books gained wide popularity within the LGBTQ community and Anne was an advocate for equality and gay rights.
I know that her son Christopher has been a resident of West Hollywood. We extend our condolences to him and his entire family at this difficult time.
How about adjourning the meeting in honor of the people who have left west hollywood because they could no longer stand being lied to by the lightweights on the city council, which is all of them. When do they get a tribute?
LOL. Good one. It is so pathetic.
