Progress Pride Flag colors coming to crosswalks

The process of re-painting the crosswalks at Santa Monica and San Vicente Blvds. will begin at the end of this month, City Manager David Wilson told Council at their meeting this week.

The rainbows, an iconic landmark since 2012, will be augmented with the arrow of colors from the Progress Pride Flag — light pink, light blue, white (representing transgender people), and brown and black (representing people of color.)

The push to change the crosswalks gained steam last year in the wake of social justice protests. The re-painting will take about three weeks and is costing the city about $85,000, according to estimates released last year.

What other intersections could use rainbow crosswalks?

The design for the new one is ugly. The rainbow flag is meant to represent the entire LGBT community and the colors had nothing to do with race. Now we are redesigning the crosswalks for to include representations for race. Doesn’t make sense to me.

One intersection in West Hollywood is enough. There are lots of others living in the city, not just the gay community. What we have now is sufficient, and the location is appropriate.

If nobody has noticed, most large cities across the Country who have a “gay neighborhood” or a street with a gay bar, a gay restraint and a small bookstore that carries the major gay selling titles on half of one block, ALL HAVE PAINTED AT THE ONE CROSSWALK IN THE TINY CITIES, AND AT ALL THE MAJOR INTERACTIONS larger cities with larger gay population centers. WeHo at this point should have the rainbows as just standard protocol and repainted as needed immediately. This is no longer “a first” or “the only city” issue anymore. No news hear. Nobody gets credit… Read more »

Crosswalks should be standardized. White or yellow hatch design. Some poor redneck from Tennessee might come up on that multi colored arrow thing and stand there for days not knowing it’s a crosswalk.

The original Rainbow Flag had nothing to do with race.
‘” Baker saw the rainbow as a natural flag from the sky, so he adopted eight colors for the stripes, each color with its own meaning (hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit).”

The original design of the flag had no race attached to it.
Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag for the 1978 San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Celebration. In the original eight-color version, pink stood for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for the sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for the soul.

Santa Monica and La Brea is the gateway to WEHO, from the east side of WEHO, and as such should be designated with the rainbow colors on the crosswalk.

$85k are they insane! 1/4 of that easily. Must be giving the contract to political contributors?

It’s always been that much. However, I do agree it is expensive.

Why doesn’t the City just do a Jackson Pollock inspired rainbow flag? Take every color known to humankind and drip it all on a flag. Thereby ensuring that no one or group is left out, especially the snowflakes.

Because that would suggest that we seek inclusivity rather than divisiveness. Shyne and company preach divisiveness. The more they create divisions and difference the better they are at exploiting the same for their personal agenda.

Just make sure nothing denotes a straight white male…to be safe better leave out straight white females to. Like equity, Inclusion only goes one way.

Up until about a couple of weeks ago the West Hollywood politicians had a free reign on anything. But I think that is fast disappearing with major backlash. https://vimeo.com/676340502
