The dog parks at WeHo Park will be closed starting this Wednesday, March 18, through March 31. They will undergo a deep cleaning and are reserved for the upcoming Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party and Charity Fundraiser. The city invites residents to instead use the Dog Park at Hart Park.
We finally get a city park that we waited so patiently for and now we lose it for a month. Just now when the weather is getting to be beautiful and we have more light in our evenings we can’t use our more than ever popular dog park. If they really need to shut it down for cleaning and some updates that can be done in two to three days. Throughout the year there are several other events that shut the park down for a week at a time. Did this city build a park for it’s residents and visitors… Read more »
I would guess that deep cleaning takes a while and involves some biohazard type equipment. Hence the two weeks. Also, it’s a city project, so….
I hear Sir Elton complained about the smell of urine coming from the area a few years back. Seems he’d be used to the scent whilst waiting for Nanny to change his diaper.
Elton John’s massive tour stage sets up and tears down in 2 days. Why does this event need 2 weeks?
The event is most definitely worthy of the cause. However, with all the additional park space, could the city not shift the event staging area and partition off the walkway where at least the larger dog park could remain open for the majority of this 2 week period? It seems like proper planning and some commonsense is failing here.
It seems the City could erect a temporary fence to create a walkway to the large dog park entrance and separation from the staging traffic. Or how about creating a temporary secondary entrance to the large dog park from the alley which would avoid staging traffic altogether? There are commonsense solutions at a minimal cost!
I can see them being closed a day or even two but why such a large timeframe???? Pathetic. I’ll be filming their activities from the alley.
How long have we waited for the new park? Is it our park or some celebrity? And the open space at PDC can easily hold a large event.
I don’t have a dog but I still think this unacceptable. You can’t just close off a community dog park for a couple weeks every year for a private event.
If it was a day or two, I’d understand. Two weeks?!
Even though the event will benefit Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, I have a hard time reconciling closing a public park for two weeks for a private event.
Well, it has happened in West Hollywood Park every year since 2014. Not sure where in the park, but the park doesn’t look like it used to.
Seems as if it might be wise for the three adjacent resident group leaders to commune with the city to find a better solution. Ditto for periodic concerts aka Super Bowl event.
“reserved for unspecified upcoming event”
Lemme guess, Elton’s Oscar party. The lowly residents have to go without for 2 weeks so the out-of-town elites can have their one night of fun.
It should be noted that the “out-of-town” elites having their “night of fun” are raising money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, an organization that has raised over $600 million to fight AIDS worldwide. This party has been going on since 1992, or for 30 years. I’m not saying there couldn’t be a better location for this. If I’m not mistaken, they had the party in the same location last year. The City is probably donating the space to avoid this non-profit from having to pay to rent a space. This party has been held in West Hollywood park since… Read more »
Being closed for the Elton John Oscar Party.
It’s Wednesday the 16th actually when the dog parks will close. And it’s too long for the dog parks to be closed. Too many residents and their pet companions are negatively impacted by this closure. There should be some way to keep them open during the event’s preparation or move the event across the street to the PDC. It was different when West Hollywood Park didn’t have any dog parks but now hundreds of residents and apartment dwellers depend on the dog parks to exercise their furry companions. The City should revisit whether this private event, charity or not, should… Read more »
