A class-action lawsuit against Block by Block, which West Hollywood contracts to provide public safety services, by one of its employees has been moved from California Superior Court to U.S. District Court.
Plaintiff Cesar J. Barrios Garay alleges that his rights and the rights of at least 2,009 other workers were violated by the company, claiming they didn’t pay proper minimum or overtime wages, deprived them of rest and meal periods, and provided inaccurate wage statements.
The lawsuit states the amount in controversy to be a total of $5,675,674.69.
The court case comes as West Hollywood leaders are considering reductions in Sheriff’s deputies to patrol city streets and instead relying more heavily on the Block by Block program.
Block by Block is the assumed name of Mydatt Services, which is based out of Ohio.
The case number is 2:22-cv-469.
I realize that what I am suggesting cannot be a requirement for comments…but it would be fascinating to see just how long some of these folks cracking snide or wise, ad hominem, on long time, well regarded residents of the city.

Well, I find this article interesting. I was just polled about a ballot initiative that would restructure the California law that allows one employee to seek “class action” status against their employer for alleged hourly wage / break infractions – which is the case here. Instead, the law would make enforcement the State’s job, and would significantly increase fines / penalties against employers who are found to have violated workers pay/benefits. Criminals oppose the police. Law abiding citizens support them. Which one are you? Taking police off the streets doesn’t lower crime it gives the criminals a free pass.
Maybe we can replace them with even cheaper less trained security. Perhaps an after school program with students on scooters or skateboards to patrol our streets since the LA times princess seems to think we don’t really need sheriff deputies.
I think she wants to simply replace the Sheriff with West Hollywood Hall monitors who can give out written demerits to people who commit crimes so that they will will shamed into modifying their behavior.

In my short time in a NYC JHS in the late 50’s, each class had a monitors that carried ‘the Demerit Book” from class to class for the teacher ; at the end of each class the teacher entered any specific “D”‘s in the book – which were totaled by the Home Room Teacher everyday. I have always thought, Block-by-Block, was another useless Public Safety incarnation. I hope the Council stops with useless, invisible patrol created to enhance Public Safety. Futile and ineffectual, disband and replace with additional Sherriffs on both bikes and foot. Block-by-Block, when seen, appears to be on a continuous break. No value to Public Safety, yet Block-by-Block is seeking $5,675,674.69. ???
Well, they are a group and I don’t see why they haven’t unionized like Unite Shmear. I mean if you ask the Council Majority, they are entitled to a “Special Wage.” They risk their lives everyday just roaming the streets of Weho. If they cover more than 500 square feet they should get double time and they should have a panic button so in the event of an emergency they can call the Sheriff to come protect them.

I don’t think they are heavily deployed on the Westside. Despite what people may have observed, these patrols have made a difference in the quality of life on the Eastside where I live. I have seen them de-escalating issues with homeless and their patrols have helped reduce auto break in’s and theft of catalytic converters. They at least put a presence on the street while on foot and bikes at a far more affordable price but they are not a replacement for Sheriff’s deputies.
