At least three new cannabis operations in WeHo will launch before the end of the year, according to city staff.
Aeon West Hollywood and Monica’s House are both projected to open this summer, while Pleasure Med is set to open for business in the fall. All three are located on Santa Monica Blvd. east of La Cienega, and each will feature a cannabis retail storefront and an area for consumption. The already open Artist Tree will soon allow for on-site consumption as well.
Another nine businesses have received approval from the Business License Commission but have no projected opening date. Three others on the waitlist to apply for expanded licenses — MedMen, Melrose Collective Corporation, Zen Healing Collective and Sunday Goods — were recently given the go-ahead to do so after Essence WeHo forfeited its licenses for adult-use sales, consumption and delivery services.
Loading ...West Hollywood’s cannabis regulations only allow for a finite number of licenses to be issued at a time. Once an applicant has secured approval of their license from the Business License Commission, they have three years to open their business or they will forfeit the license. City staff members are looking to increase that time limit to four years.
City Council will receive an update at their meeting Monday on the implementation of the city’s cannabis ordinance, which includes a myriad of changes and developments.
City Hall is exploring the possibility of holding cannabis-focused special events in West Hollywood. Staff members are currently at work trying to answer these burning questions:
- Should events include both the sale and consumption of cannabis?
- Should anyone with a state permit be able to hold a special event in the City or is it limited to those with “brick and mortar” stores in West Hollywood?
- How many cannabis special events can an applicant hold in the City each year?
- Where can the events be located?
- Does the cannabis sensitive use buffer apply to special event locations?
- What types of odor mitigation should be provided when smoking is a part of an event?
- Can cannabis special events occur on public property?
City Council may also direct staff to develop an education campaign focusing on safe adult use of cannabis in light of the anticipated opening of new retail stores and lounges. The City Council will also consider directing staff to monitor cannabis licensee training protocols and report back to Council on program compliance.

A giant commercial grab was attempted on the City of Pasadena not long ago. While on the oversight committee for the refurbishment of the Rose Bowl, the budget ran wild and one of the solutions proposed by South Pasadena resident, coincidentally Weho City Manager, to invite the NFL to utilize the stadium. Needless to say the residents wanted none of that.
Could the cannabis metropolis have come from a similar proposition while the city snoozed?

City Hall needs the drug money to fund the out-of-control salaries of City employees. I’m waiting for Horvath and Erickson to push selling heroin and cocaine to fill the city coffers.
When did the residents of this city ever vote to have cannabis have such a large footprint in our city? We voted for recreational use but not to turn our city into a pot Mecca! How do we stop these buffoons that are running our city?! People mentioned a recall. Maybe that’s the way to go. They certainly aren’t listening to the people.
Happy to see this. Bring them on. Seems like too many, but if there are too many, some will close, because of supply and demand.

This may sound like a radical perspective but is essence Weho City Staff, & City Manager & City Council appear to think as if they have a mandate similar to a Vladimir Putin. The residents do not appear to have a vote on these sweeping issues which are radically changing the city. Foxes in the Hen House to be sure while advocating for pet projects amplifying their political futures. Ms. Shyne has aspirations to the state assembly and Ms. Horvath to the BOS. Outrageous and happening under our cloiective noses.
COVID was very convenient for our city council. No in-person responsibility, no one allowed in city hall, cherry picking resident feedback at council meetings (all feedback had to be in writing, submitted prior to the council meeting and was vetted by the council – no disagreeing with the council). The cannabis map was changed by “clerks” without oversight (reported here in Wehoville) and approved by the council. I wanted to comment, but I just have to say that the 4 previous comments that I see have said it all.
I know we can complain about tobacco smoke – but are we allowed to complain about ganja smoke? A granddaughter is seriously allergic to it and cannot visit us when our neighbors party w/smoke coming over the wall from several users of marijuana. WE SEEM TO BE OUTNUMBERED.
I think the idiots at City Hall think this is a good thing. They lack the critical thinking skills to plan ahead or foresee obvious issues.

WeHo appears to be all about revenue without regard to the residents. City Staff, City Manager & 4 of 5 council members favor schemes that produce revenue and are oblivious to tangential and exponential effects. Zero critical thinking outside these individuals pet self promotional projects. It’s our own local domestic war zone when one layers in the crime.

It’s possible that the master plan for most of this was designed by the former city manager. Then came the interesting timing of the pandemic, retirement and remaining less able staff clinging to the plan with little ability to change it. Overly generous salaries and benefits cover up many “clerk” errors and word salad explanations that rarely make sense.
Weho is its own reality show but it’s not entertaining in the least.
