Debbie Meister, the sister of Mayor Lauren Meister, was hospitalized the week before last after being run over by a scooter rider at the crosswalk of Santa Monica Blvd. and Westmount.
“I stepped into the crosswalk going north, and bam! The scooter seemed to come out of nowhere and went right into me,” Meister said.
Meister was taken immediately to Cedars Sinai Medical center and spent two nights in the hospital after undergoing surgery on that friday. Her injuries included a fractured elbow, broken bones in her right foot and lots of bruises.

The scooter rider should be cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a cross walk. Want to bet they were either on their phone or listening to music on a headset. Obviously NOT paying attention to pedestrians, It appears the scooter was on the sidewalk then traversed to the street, there is no way they should not have seen the pedestrian. What are you talking about? The scooter rider is obviously not riding on the sidewalk and his view of the pedestrian is blocked by the traffic pole. Also who just steps out in to the street without looking first? This could have just as easily been a bike rider with the same outcome. Obviously the scooter rider is at fault but there is nothing indicating he is listening to music or not paying attention, seems like an unfortunate accident, take it easy on the judging
Please ban these scooters. If not there should be more enforcement of the laws. Bicyclists are just as bad with running red lights and not stopping for Stop signs.

Not sure who she should sue. This is a serious accident and illustrates the problem with “scooters” in general. If it was my decision to make, I would. start with the city and their decision to return these toys to the kids to ride like kids. We removed them once, but they came back. Why would anyone change riding behavior when no one is EVER ticketed on a scooter? Nothing will change. There is no traffic law enforcement in LA. “GTF off the sidewalk” is what I shout when I see someone riding one on the sidewalk.

Ban the dangerous scooter/riders and sue the companies out of business. OR — get greedy with the scooter companies and get kickbacks like WEHO gets from pot shops, bars, hotels, restaurants, and developers. Duh!
Both scooter riders broke the law. It’s against the law to run a red light and to ride on the sidewalk.

Injuries resulting from riders and pedestrians in a recent study(don’t have the numbers) have been substantially underestimated and are higher than those of motorcycles. Public Safety of these devices should have been top of the list for Ms. Cook in developing proper protocol on the job. She has apparently been with the city since 1999 and has perfected the protocol of public speak but severely neglected practical scooter solutions. Pedestrians need to look before stepping into the roadway.
In the video you can see that the guy was illegally on the sidewalk then quickly veers into the street all probably out of her line of sight to her left. Hope they got his information.
