Attorney Zekiah N. Wright will officially launch their historic campaign to become the first Black and first non-binary member of the West Hollywood City Council with a campaign kick-off event at Gym Bar in West Hollywood on Tuesday, May 10th at 5:30 p.m. An employment and labor law litigator, Wright has served on the West Hollywood Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board since 2019 and has already earned a bevy of major endorsements, including West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tem Sepi Shyne, SEIU United Health Workers, and over 20 community leaders, businesses, and elected officials.
A Florida native, Wright worked for the US Attorney’s Office in Washington D.C. before moving to West Hollywood to start their own law firm as a solution to the high numbers of LGBTQ+, Black, and Latinx employees and business owners who do not have representation by LGBTQ+ and Black attorneys. Zekiah’s campaign will focus on public safety, homelessness, affordable housing, renters’ rights, quality of life improvements, and supporting small businesses as the city recovers from the Coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m running for West Hollywood City Council because our city needs a community leader that will build coalitions, be accountable to the people they represent, and move us forward with common-sense policies. I am that leader” said Wright. “I believe in building on the great work that has already been done in our city and thinking outside the box to address the dire issues facing our city. It will take all of us working together, but I believe we can usher in a brighter future for West Hollywood.”
In addition to the campaign kick-off event on May 10th, Wright’s campaign will be participating in an evening of comedy and a roast of West Hollywood City Councilmember John D’Amico on May 19th at Rocco’s in West Hollywood.

When you’re on a sinking ship and all the lifeboats (current city council members) have leaks in them, don’t turn away an independent lifeboat which has not been compromised by the current toxic and ineffective atmosphere (which is the history of West Hollywood leadership). Be willing to accept help before you go down with the ship. It’s time to rotate the crops in West Hollywood leadership. Nothing healthy will grow in old, tired soil except weeds. It’s hard to get rid of weeds, but once you do good things start growing.
Zekiah stacks up and then that endorsement from Shyne. That’s a huge negative. How long have they lived in West Hollywood? They obviously want to defund the sheriffs department. Where do they stand on Public Safety and protecting the public?
They/them. Such protocol as it suggests multiple personalities. Could be a variation of the Me, Myself and I syndrome. Is that it? How do the little green men from Mars fit in? Or what about the garden variety citizens or are they now classified as plants?
Disrespect for a persons choices for self identification is not a trait of anyone other than a bigoted Neanderthal. Let’s leave the name calling to Horvath.
Far from being disrespectful, Atty. Wright has chosen to identify as other as in self identification which automatically sets up the perception of division. What Atty. Wright seeks is inclusion but simultaneously promotes identification as some benevolent unifying gesture. It makes no sense. A course in international diplomacy or basic social grace might help. Starting out with chip on one’s shoulder becomes a cause and distinction which seems counterproductive.
He has a chance…..albeit a small one.

That quote at the end sounds nice, but I see two big red flags. Red Flag 1: Worked in D.C., a city of attention seeking politico nerds who run around talking about forming “coalitions”, yet get absolutely nothing done. Red Flag 2: Their business sounds like a non-profit. We have enough non-profit people or pseudo non-profit people on the City Council. When it comes to real business owners, there really isn’t any representation. Career non-profit workers don’t understand how difficult it is to do business in a city like West Hollywood, and business owners need more support.

Even major newspapers have an Op-Ed section. You can disagree or agree. That’s the point. They publish opinion pieces intended to get people thinking and talking about important and relevant topics. Roe v. Wade is one of the most consequential cases (and the law of the land) for the last 50 years. Overturning it would be horrific, and at a minimum, worthy of an Op-Ed.
