Fresno drops out of pilot project letting bars open till 4 a.m. Will WeHo follow suit?

Last call in Fresno will remain 2 a.m.

After a public backlash, Mayor Jerry Dyer has withdrawn his city from a pilot project that would allow a limited number of California cities — including West Hollywood — to permit bars to stay open until 4 a.m., according to the Fresno Bee.

“I cannot let a divisive debate on this issue disrupt Fresno’s positive momentum on so many fronts — including our growing Downtown Fulton entertainment district, the small area that could have benefited under your bill,” Dyer wrote to Sen. Scott Wiener, whose bill would enable the later closing time.

“The hard truth is that the city of Fresno has some of the highest rates of drunk driving and DUIs in our nation. We just allocated more money in this year’s budget to hire additional officers focused on keeping our streets safe,” Councilmember Tyler Maxwell said. “It would be the wrong move for Fresno to usher in a policy that would not only incentivize reckless driving but also pull more officers away from neighborhoods.”

There were 11 DUI arrests in June in West Hollywood, according to the sheriff. Also in June, WeHo City Council approved a resolution in support of the legislation should it pass the Senate.

Only Mayor Lauren Meister and Mayor Pro Tem Sepi Shyne voted against the measure.

“I didn’t support it the first time this came around this council, and I don’t support it now,” Meister said. And I’m really tired of (West Hollywood) being a Petri dish for Scott Weiner and the State, and every little whim that they come up with.”

Bars open until 4am is stupid and reckless. Period.

I would guess most of the people who actually both live and vote in West Hollywood would vote against a 4:00am closing. Councilmembers should think about this outcome.

And let’s face it, if Fresno thinks it’s a bad idea, well….

Fresno isn’t exactly a destination for nightlife, and is an odd comparison to West Hollywood culture. This move isn’t exactly surprising. I can see we’re going to keep getting as much mileage out of this “issue” as possible here because it keeps the NIMBYs buzzing.

That’s a go-to (declaring NIMBY) to dismiss real, legitimate concerns about quality of life issues and the cost of life with the increased hours.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. That’s an expression that applies to the control that a small amount of NIMBYs exert in any given location over the majority of people. I know you will say that this particular “issue” has nothing to do with a need, but if the demand is there, well then it’s a need. The amount of actual people who would support being able to drink in bars during later hours is going to greatly outnumber the NIMBYs opposed to allowing them to. So the majority should be served. Whether those are… Read more »

That may be, but stupid people perpetually have plenty of money to spend in West Hollywood. And it’s predominantly going to be in the bars, most brick and mortar retail isn’t a practicality anymore.

I agree w/you. There are other cities in the nation that allow bar closures late into the morning (hello, Las Vegas). I also moved here in the late 90’s, and I expected this to be a nightlife hub. I lived on Larrabee for 5 years, and I knew what I was moving into. DUI’s concern me, for sure. But people have transportation options that doesn’t involve self-driving.

Seems like Fresno has adults in charge of sound municipal governance.

This little fiefdom is for the pleasure and at the pleasure of the three and one half reprobates on city council. Folks with no life experience or integrity playing government to make careers for themselves. Social Justice hipness! Wise up residents and exterminate this pox on West Hollywood or it will never recover.

Why don’t the good people of WeHo organize a protest to stop the bars from opening up at 4! Instead of complaining get organized and protest on city hall!!! Don’t stop demand action.

Too many people who post here are just venting, complaining, etc. They don’t comment at City Council meetings. They don’t do anything except bitch and moan. Nothing gets done.

You mean, if they listen to commenters on WeHoville? I think the city should do an outreach statement to residents. Then we can see where we truly are.
