Zinc Cafe & Market has opened its doors on the corner of Westbourne and Melrose at the former location of Le Pain Quotidien. This has no relation to the Zinque restaurant that has established a great reputation across the street and one block over.
It’s the third location and the second in Los Angeles; the first was opened in the late 1980s in Laguna Beach.
Many people in the neighborhood are baffled at the confusion of the two places with the same sounding name.
Let’s talk about the precedent the City and planners has set with this restaurant. The backyard garden has tables for 25+ diners. The kitchen, set up, garbage, and restrooms are also located in the back garden area. This area abuts the apartment building on 613 Westbourne and 612 Huntley. Anyone that lives in the area knows how everything echoes and the sound of a fork falling to the ground sounds like car crash, 5 people sound like 50. Is this really the only location they found in the city? Right across from Zinqué? Pretty pathetic actually, trying to take advantage of the confusion.
Reminds me of the Palm steakhouse and the Palm lesbian bar on SMB. I’ll meet you at Zinc on Melrose. No, not that Zinque! There’s going to be a lot of no show first dates.

But seriously, I love their location downtown. This is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood.
