NOV. 1: Share your thoughts on WeHo’s controversial Historical Context Study

The City of West Hollywood invites the community to attend an in-person Information and Engagement Session about the City’s Historical Context Study.

The Historical Context Study is a project to develop an in-depth analysis of the historical context of West Hollywood and research racially and culturally discriminatory policies that existed in the area from the 19th century until present day. It will also identify the history of Indigenous peoples and demographic shifts of inhabitants. The findings of the study will inform the City on next steps in establishing initiatives to address social and racial equity.

On August 31, 2022, the City held a virtual Community Listening Session for the City’s project consultant, Architectural Resources Group, to provide an overview of the goals and objectives of the study.  The in-person Information and Engagement Session will allow the Architectural Resources Group to provide the community with an overview of the goals and purpose of the study, including project updates on findings and discoveries thus far. It will also provide an opportunity for the community to provide input on individual/lived experience with discrimination in West Hollywood or knowledge of past discrimination perpetrated against groups/individuals living or working in West Hollywood.

The in-person Information and Engagement Session is free and open to everyone and will take place on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 6 p.m. at the Plummer Park Community Center, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, in Rooms 5 and 6.

If community members are interested in providing input but are not able to attend the in-person Information and Engagement Session, a public comment form is available at the Community Services section of the City’s website.

If special assistance to participate in this meeting is required, please submit your request at least 48 hours prior to the meeting to jduckworth@weho.org.

brilliant, Let’s all go back in time and remind everybody of all the mistakes that were made by people who are no longer with us and have nothing to do with people alive today. Another example of how being wokey is dopey.

The City strives to be responsive to the needs to the community and “is committed to actively seeking public participation”? So how was it that back in February, the Public Safety Commission, without any notice to the public, was allowed to make a motion to cut ten Sheriff’s deputies? While have always been plenty of involved West Hollywood residents and community leaders willing to serve of the Public Safety Commission, somehow someone felt it was necessary to have Nika Song Shion relocate so the Commission could have the benefit of her “wisdom”.

I agree with JF1. This is absolutely ridiculous. Spend the money on current problems. This City Council wastes so much money on ridiculous things. I can’t wait until a new Council majority takes over.

Ridiculous. Just pandering to the “woke” crowd. This area wasn’t even a city until 1984. Stop with this crap and spend your time and OUR money on the present problems…of which we have many. Listen to the people and their concerns over your own political agenda!

West Hollywood was created in 1984. The time to have done a Historic Context Study was the or at least when the city enacted the Historic Preservation Ordinance. For years the city had been purposely ignorant of the cultural resources and to date does not have on staff a knowledgable Historic Preservation individual. The city believes that having a “consultant’ appear at Historic Preservation Commission Meetings to a largely uninspired and ignorant group of place holders does not legitimize any effort. This aspect of the city has been grossly manipulated and will again be manipulated as particular council members are… Read more »

OH I lived here off and on since late 80s.
I can write a book about what went on from La brea to Robertson from the decadent Streets to the bars. Is this a therapy session they are having.
Do the people give a F——. Although I was discriminated in the work place for years. Does that count to join in on the sessions. LOL

Can’t make the session, but have several tomes on the history of the area which I can donate in hoped off saving some money for the city. Also, have been in area now known as West Hollywood for 49 years and my memory is still pretty good.

I can see it now, StarDate 2322, the inhabitants of what is left of the USA declare the “woke” criers of 2022 to be cruel and inhuman. All buildings with RBG, Obama and (God forbid) Pelosi to be renamed because of their immoral ideology. What goes around will come around eventually, yesterday’s acceptance is today’s immorality.

West Hollywood wasn’t a city until 1984. The 1.9 square miles was merely an unincorporated area of L.A. County. Why is this an issue? Dwelling on issues that date all the way back to the 19th C. is pointless.

You hit the nail on the head. These woke bored people are destroying the Democratic Party. Looks like architectural resources group found a big sucker to suck money out of. Who made this decision??

It wasn’t the people, the residents, the voters of this City…it’s Horvath, Erickson and Shyne pushing this crap. We’ll be rid of Horvath soon enough. Then we have to work together to get rid of the other two in two years by voting them out..if the city survives their bullish*t.

This city has a long historical background. I will not discuss this. Time will give us the answer.

Cannot tell you how many times the city has engaged the community to participate in the future then does what they want anyway. This goes back decades. Who are they fooling???? They don’t care what the community wants. Pathetic.
