The final movie showing at Studs in West Hollywood will be Saturday, management confirmed to WEHOville this week, after which the venue will close.
The theater has been screening porn films since the 1960s and is one of the few remaining adult entertainment establishments in the city.
It originally opened as the Monica Theatre in 1940, before becoming became part of the Pussycat Theatre chain in 1970. It then was converted into the Tomkat, followed by Studs Theatre, which eventually re-branded to Studs at the Pussycat, paying homage to its notorious predecessor.
The building hits the market on Monday, according to illi Commercial Real Estate. The commercial lease is being offered at $25,000/mo.

It would be great to have another small theater on Santa Monica Boulevard. It would meaningfully revitalize this section of the boulevard with uplifting nighttime activity, and improve/upgrade the overall profile of the city. The city council should take action to jump on this opportunity.

Is the building not for sale? The city should buy the property, Hope go in with a hazmat crew sterilize the joint and get all the sticky off the floor and then convert it to a live theater venue. I would guess there are more than 99 seats in the facility but I’m sure it could be curtained off so that equity waiver could be done in there. Maybe give the bigger venue to Celebration Theater and have them move in the city. It is quite the historical structure considering the eras it went through.
I think it’s a much better venue for the celebration theatre than remodeling their current location. It’s just not big enough.

Keep in mind this was a movie theater. As far I I know no stage, no wings and no dressing rooms. But if it is possible to turn it into performance space, the last organization you want to do that is the city.
The City purchased and is in the process of preparing for the renovation of the Coast Playhouse on SMB by City Hall.
That’s what I was thinking. What’s happening with this project? The city already owns a theatrical venue and doesn’t need to buy another one.
