We need more county supervisors, Horvath says

Lindsey Horvath told KCRW that she’d like to see more seats added to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to which she was just elected.

“Whether it’s seven or … nine or 11 [board members] … in the longer term, we really need to think about what is the best way for this county government to run and function to deliver the services that people are counting on,” Horvath said.

County Supervisor-elect Lindsey Horvath, center, flanked (L to R) by fellow Supervisors Holly Mitchell, Hilda Solis, Sheila Kuehl (retiring) and Janice Hahn.

Horvath’s comments on the topic come only days after L.A. City Councilmember and fellow progressive Nithya Raman took to Instagram to make the case for expanding L.A. City Council.

Adding more supervisors to the board is a touchy subject in local politics. While some feel it will improve L.A County’s vastly disproportionate political representation — five elected officials governing more than 9.83 million people — others see it as a needless expansion of government and breeding ground for waste and corruption.

Supervisors each come armed with their own staffs and offices, and they have great discretion in how their multimillion dollars budgets are spent, who gets county contracts, etc. They are the top bosses. They can’t be fired by anyone, except voters.

Horvath was elected to represent District 3, which includes West Hollywood, and will be sworn in at noon Monday. She replaces retiring Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who is currently under investigation by the state attorney general over bribery and corruption allegations.

In decades past, the Board was a boys-only club. The Supervisors were known as the “Five Little Kings” because of the power and influence they wielded over the county.

Now it’s an all-female affair. Horvath called it the “Sisterhood of Supervisors,” which is perhaps a kinder and more inclusive term than “Five Little Queens.”

This doesn’t really matter because of the way the supervisors do things. whenever anything comes up for a vote the supervisor whose district it is is given the power to make the decision and all the other supervisors go along with it regardless of whether they think it’s good or bad. until this sort of ridiculousness to stopped nothing will change…

I feel sure Lindsey wants to expand the Board to include her now hanger-on Abby Land & probably John Heilman. , That’s why she brought up the subject right out of the gate so she could get the action going on getting it done. And that’s also the way she thinks.

Bingo, that was my first thought before reading your comment.

A few words from the mouth of one of the Father’s of Our Country, George Washington in his Farewell Address of 1796.

“Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your reputation. For ‘tis better to be alone than in bad company”

WHY give her any publicity at all? She was not good for WeHo and will not be good for LA either.

California. Beauty, glamor.., is now gone with the wind… Looking at that group I don’t know why anyone would move to Los Angeles.

“She replaces retiring Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who is currently under investigation by the state attorney general over bribery and corruption allegations.”

I think it is important to note that the outgoing Sheriff opened this investigation, and he is an arch-rival of Kuehl, and the entire Board of Supervisors. It is possible that this investigation is a political attack, which is why the State took the investigation from LASD. They will figure it out, one way or another, and decide to indict her, if necessary.

You may not be wrong. That said, she was tipped off to the raid on her home (as she said clearly on TV), which clearly is illegal, by someone installed by the board of supervisors to oversee the sheriff’s department.

I agree that the board should be expanded, but it should be with far fewer staff and bureaucrats in each supervisor’s office. It’s hard to comprehend up to 40 people on a staff for any legislative office. The citizen’s of Los Angeles County should also know about and question the discretionary budgets of the supervisors–that’s where the corruption stars.

Think about it.
Their constituencies are vast and huge – by the numbers. Not sure that 40 staff is too large.

Their staff members are vital resources for constituents who need assistance with County agencies. I have been helped on numerous occasions by staffers in the District 3 offices when faced with red tape and bureaucratic intransigence on the part of County agencies. The staff members in the District 3 offices were able to sort things out for me by the next day each time. It would be criminal to reduce the number of staff members who are there to interact with constituents.

A good policy maker would fix the red tape and bureaucratic intransigence.

A sure-fire ‘death-nail’, Lindsey Horvath joining local LA politics will further erode this city. Nithya Raman can continue her degradation & ruining of her surrounding areas. Watch & see, NOT WHAT WE NEEDED @ this fractured moment in LA’s history. DOOMED by 2030 unless you are privileged, carrying, & protected.

Honestly though, anything to limit some of these folks power I’d be ok with. We have like 5 people making decisions for millions. Kinda crazy.

We need more men! Instead of five men hating women. Who have turned the county into one of the worst places to live in the United States.

Men-hating women? That’s a brash statement. I know little about the others, but people can say what they want about Horvath: I don’t think she hates men. I know next to nothing about the other supervisors, but something tells me you are just making that statement, based on no examples or evidence, or very little.

I think it’s important for Women and representation for Lindsey to get her promotion. Don’t agree with her Public Safety policies in Weho, do admire her political ambition
