ALAN STRASBURG | The zero-sum politics of Sepi Shyne

I have often commented that victimhood and martyrdom are Sepi Shyne’s political oxygen. Her narrative is one of being wronged throughout her life. Every tale of progress is laced with a reference to being a victim. Her oft-repeated tale of being targeted at a gay-friendly coffee shop while an undergrad in an otherwise liberal-leaning Bay Area coffee shop sounds like the thing of inspiration to change the world. However, combined with so many other tales of woe, it comes across as dubious, at best.

Sepi’s otherwise honorable intentions of helping people who have truly been the subject of historical wrongs is weakened by narratives espoused by many in the toxic ideological left that dictate that many of us are existentially wrong because of our history, and frankly, our genetics. I once wrote directly in a text message to Sepi that she is an anti-gay-white-male bigot and given her history in her short tenure on the West Hollywood City Council, I stand by that private characterization.

In Sepi’s world, a world of zero-sum politics, some group must be blamed and shamed for historical sins and wrongs. It is not enough for us to have made personal commitments to a better future for all, and it is not enough to have worked for the betterment of any one group or another; unless we subscribe to the intolerance of political correctness, and dare I say it, cancel culture, we are doomed to being the recipients of name-calling and judgment from the nouveau progressives who have hijacked all that it means to be a classic liberal and progressive as they redefine those terms in a straight-jacket of unbending rules of group-think adherence.

These poisonous politics are exacerbated by reliance on identity over policy, ideology over sound governance, and intransigence over reasonable compromise. Remember when Sepi turned to Lauren Meister and pledged to work with Lauren only if their mutual interests in running West Hollywood aligned with Sepi’s core values? It’s a take-no-prisoners approach to politics that is on the left every bit as toxic, intolerant, and dangerous as the politics on the far right, only in the former we in the vast middle, and solid left-of-center axis of reality are their target and their perceived enemy.

Now, after barely two years of her petulant politics and performative wokeness, Sepi wants to take her bullying approach to policy making to Congress. The 30th Congressional District is far more diverse than the provincial politics of West Hollywood. Will she follow in Lindsey Horvath’s footsteps and lie about accomplishments–remember Lindsey’s claim (lie) to have reduced homelessness in “her community” by 80%? Will Sepi continue to inhale her oxygen of victimhood and martyrdom to gain a standing and create more victims and martyrs who, like her, are seemingly devoid of fortitude? At the risk of sounding cynical, such antics are the hallmark of Sepi’s savior politics and nanny politics.

The next twelve months with Sepi as West Hollywood’s titular mayor are going to be a fascinating display of imperiousness, divisiveness, and performance art. I find humor in the pompousness of Sepi’s “official” Facebook page under the avatar of “Office of Mayor Sepi Shyne.” She even suggests that constituents reach her through her “staff” with the possessive pronoun combined with the haughtiness of referring to (non-existent) staff suggesting she has an office suite filled with her minions. Such regal arrogance heretofore has found no home in the small-town politics of our once fair hamlet. Like Horvath before her, and her current comrade on council John Erickson, Sepi is part of a new set of values that has little to do with the nuts and bolts of sound municipal governance and the everyday needs of the residents of West Hollywood, and everything to do with personal political grandstanding and ladder-climbing.

West Hollywood has been made worse for the zero-sum politics of Sepi Shyne, and other nouveau progressives. In situations like this, one can always rely on the sage words of Mark Twain, who wrote in The Gilded Age, “…no country can be well governed unless its citizens as a body keep religiously before their minds that they are the guardians of the law and that law officers are only the machinery for its execution, nothing more.”

“In the midst of protests in Iran, the artist Soheila Sokhanvari has created 31 portraits of the country’s earliest feminist icons, from actresses and singers to writers and filmmakers. The paintings are on show at the Barbican Centre, in London, through the end of the month.”

Just read this in Air Mail. I wonder if our “Mayor” was included?

Unlikely. However, SS is working hard to create her own monument here in Weho. Did you receive the bulletin from the city yesterday about the Iran inspired event? It was produced by City Staff aka Staff of Mayor Shyne. Don’t recall this as having been approved during a CC meeting. How does this happen?

Why no. And I am quite insulted. I had a serious sweetie in the 70’s who hailed from Nishapur. I cooked Abgosht, I ate at Iranian restaurants often and hung out in a crowd of his friends and celebrated Navroj. And Madame Mayor had not yet been born I suspect.I also repped a firm that wholesaled Caspian caviar and whose owner was from Iran and became a good friend. For her info, BH in the 70’s was populated by many Iranians, most of whom brought style and revenue to that city with their excellent business fashion and real estate sense.… Read more »

Likewise many Persian friends and their food is quite spectacular. All these folks in BH must have been recently waiting for the Second Coming aka Sepi Shyne who presumes to have all the answers so she can pave the way to her personal political future.

Question is how do residents in West Hollywood believe her propaganda?

Chloe

Well, that’s a good question. But even more searing is this one: How does she believe it herself.

Last night Ms. Shyne ramped up her council member comments with bi-weekly news reports on Iran and a discussion sponsored by the RAHA group in Council Chambers. Even though the CC voted that the comments would be heard at the end of the meeting, apparently Ms. Shyne believes they don’t apply to her.

How have I been wronged and oppressed? Let me count the ways? Born a destined to be use and abused female infant, the slings and arrows just began early and never seem to stop. Not the same as Madame Shyne’s , as I was born in the US and coddled by a family that saw to my needs and loved me …it now seems to me…A LOT. Women mostly and a father with a style and intellect that I must have gotten in the DNA. Let into the REAL world however, I didn’t do very well. Too smart, too verbal,… Read more »

Hilariously written but the subject is not. You’ve hit the nail on the head…that is like the nails that zMs. Shyne sees in every direction as she presumes herself to be a petulant and contrived hammer without an ounce of grace or dignity. Poor Us! The Community that will have to survive this eternal victimization as she portends to save us from ourselves.

I am flattered *(seems too shallow) by your reply, Alan. She is whiner and she has it elevated it to an art form that will see a museum wall. Mothers in every tongue have spoken these words to petulant pre-schools: “Stop whining”. I wonder if she whined in moot court? Sadly there is no recourse to her position of which I am aware. Real elected officials can be recalled. She lost me when I tripped over the first scooter in my path. Isn’t there some sort of Parliamentary “gag” rule? I must reread my Robert’s Rules of Order and see… Read more »

Not Alan here but thanks. Any reasonably alert person can easily recognize a con when they see one. The stories and pronouncements simply become increasingly more elaborate and the con more defensive.

I think Sepi has done an amazing job and very much support her. Imagine all the people who do almost nothing to better this city yet complain over and over agin about those who are bold enough to step into the political arena and actually try to make a difference.

Ms. Shyne stated that “she ran for City Council because West Hollywood had lost its purpose”. Can you imagine that? Shyne single handedly determined that and has the temerity to believe she is the way finder and paragon of community virtue. Neither has the scruples or ideals, and is far from a likable individual.

While I tend to agree that the City had lost it’s direction which is why the voters placed their hopes and trust into unproven new comers. Unfortunately under the current Council majority, the ship of State seems headed toward the rocks. Change can be good, but obviously not always.

What three major issues do you feel need to be corrected currently for the benefit of the entire community, not divisive or splinter groups?

Obviously law enforcement and it’s relationship to the community; how City Hall relates and communicates with our residents and the need for leaders who can have opinions on national or cultural issues but whose main focus, (and interest), is on how to make this community safer, more walkable and more equitable.

Well stated Steve. Unfortunately we have a City Hall AND members of the City Council who don’t get the concept and benefits of a small safe city. They are perpetually attempting to be something they are not. People serving that are not comfortable in their own skins are unable to truly serve others. Although many City Staff are well qualified they are divorced from the city especially in the Planning & Community Development area. To them it is simply an occupation and has no other lasting value. Prime reason why developers get away with murder dissecting and strip mining the… Read more »

What kind of kickback or commission is Sepi Shyne receiving from Block By Block? The bureaucrats at City Hall refuse to state whether someone is getting a commission or not. The woman who engaged BBB in Santa Monica received hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Sepi Shyne had every opportunity to become an honorable person but does not possess the integrity to do so. Her duplicitous, conflicted outlook appears to serve no one other than herself.

Let’s stop any success she perceives to have in hijacking our small city to become her springboard enabling additional misguided ventures.

Meanwhile, this evening the item to move Councilmember Comments to the end of the meetings will certainly limit her air time.

But she’s the first lesbian Iranian woman to serve! You can’t question her! Her service is historic and deserves no criticism. Any criticism is xenophobic, homophobia, racist, or misogynistic.
