Dad takes son to WeHo nail salon after teacher says it’s for ‘girls only’

Local teacher Christian Shearhod noticed his 3-year-old son was a little dispirited when he came home from school earlier this week.

The boy’s teacher, it turned out, had scolded him for wanting to paint his nails, calling it a”girls only” activity.

So Shearhod drove his son to a salon in West Hollywood to get his nails done right.

The incident was captured on TikTok, where the video of Ashton proudly choosing pink for his nail treatment has garnered over 4 million views. Shearhod, who is a teacher in Los Angeles County, wants his son to feel confident and unashamed about his interest in painting his nails, which he and his girlfriend have been doing together since Ashton was 2. The next day, Shearhod spoke with Ashton’s day care teachers and asked them to avoid making similar comments in the future.

The TikTok video received mostly positive comments, but Shearhod also received negative comments, including a question asking if Ashton was gay. Shearhod responded that at 3 years old, Ashton cannot have a sexuality yet. He is dating a transgender woman and identifies as straight, and he uses his TikTok platform to support LGBTQ students and encourage them to be themselves. Despite the negativity he sometimes faces, he remains committed to promoting acceptance and inclusivity.

Both Christian Shearhod and Eden Estrada are very well adjusted University Educated professionals with NO criminal record what so ever. This is a whole lot more than I can say for the people criticizing them and their parenting. It’s bad enough that Eden has been the victim of a number of transphobic hate crimes before she formed her own loving family. The people here should be defending their right to continue living their peaceful constructive lives without any violent disruption.

Those two truly look like the kind that would paint their little boys nails. I think we call that grooming.

All this grooming originated when parents started to allow girls to wear pants. How can society possibly exist without gender specific clothing and decorations. (eye roll full 360 degrees)

If you could go back 10 years ago and ask that “father” if he would wear nail polish. NO. Today’s insanity and culture corrosion is breeding a next level of idiots.

Fortunately today’s dads have fewer hang ups. As a Family Law attorney I know lots of dads, including dads drafted into having their nails done by their daughters. I know we don’t have a lot of kids in West Hollywood but boys and girls painting their nails is happening all over the place, not because it is a gender statement, but because kids find it fun. So can we lighten up?

Boys are boys. Girls are girls. We need to respect the differences. We need to stop conflating gender and all that BS. I like hot men and pretty women. Let’s stick to the basics. FFS! Some things should be exclusive to the female and male society. That is exciting about the place of origin. F Woke. It’s reckless.

Surprising response from a Family Law attorney. Painting nails and don’t forget the green, pink or purple hair , may be all over the place due to aggressive marketing similar to flavored cigarettes and vape cartridges. Next it will be the creep of tattoos. So you think this is ok? Many of these regrettable choices will come back to haunt them when they seek a respectful position in the professional world unless you might want to limit them to Weho values, A very sad thought.

Are people still hung up on the idea that colors (especially those that easily wash off or can be taken off) placed anywhere are masculine or feminine, acceptable or unacceptable? Some humans are so random and idiotic with their perpetual hangups. Kids like pretty colors. They might want to wear them. If you see acknowledging that as “grooming” or sexualizing somehow, YOU are clearly the disturbed one, to state the obvious.

Sorry, couldn’t make it past the video. Nail salons are for Marilyn Manson.

How do you suppose that happened?
Are we about to see the “family” monetizing this scenario into a large revenue stream?

The only story here is that of the vapid nature of social media and the manufactured crises created by those who seek to exploit (monetize) their presence on it.

Good lesson for teacher.

Men wear nail polish, teacher is out of line suggesting its only for girls. The kid sees his mom and dad applying it, obviously he would want to do the same, no big deal.

Exactly! Just let kids be kids in any way they want to express themselves creatively. The so-called adults are the problem including many on here that have an issue with painting nails. So Judgey. Ick. I think they are an adorable family and this is a sweet story. I shouldn’t have read the comments.

People who want to sexualize children by asking whether they are gay are the issue, not a parent allowing a kid to paint his or her nails.

I’m a little suspicious. I just hope that he’s not using his son for a TikTok following. I think the father is a little too thirsty trying to exploit this.

I hope a teacher wouldn’t say something like that and I also hope a father wouldn’t exploit his child for publicity.

Right-on! I remember when aerosol hairspray for men was commercially introduced about 1964. I was a little boy about 10 and secretly confused about my “orientation.” My mom said to me (something to the effect of) “Hairspray for men? That is SO gross. Hairspray is for women, NOT for men! What is the world coming to?” That was a very hurtful comment to her little boy (I’m now a grown man), and non-supportive to the unsettled grown man I have ultimately become today. So, in a word, thank you, Christian Shearhod!

This is not sexualization of children. This is a father reinforcing his child’s choices. It’s only nail polish thank goodness. If the boy came home wanting a toy gun that would be something else – though hopefully a different sort of teachable moment.

Yes. The child “chose” this particular grooming vector

Children often mimic their parents. The child already has green hair and painted nails. Folks are suggesting his choices be reinforced? Did the parents ever consider guidance or setting a respectful and responsible example? Currently we seem to be suffering as a result of several generations where parents were too permissive and wanted to appear hip and happening. Societies break down. Thankfully my parents were not one of the crowd.
