Sprouts in WeHo will shut its doors next month

Sprouts Farmers Market, an essential source of groceries for many West Hollywood residents, is closing down its location at 8550 Santa Monica Blvd.

The market, which first opened in July 2019, will bid farewell to WeHo on Sunday, April 30, the company’s Chief Operations Officer Dan Sanders confirmed Monday.

“Choosing to close a store is always a difficult decision; however, this store is approximately 30% larger than our current prototype and underperformed financially. Sprouts continues to move forward with our strategy of opening smaller format stores that provide improved box economics and have been reduced to ~23,000 sq. ft,” Sanders said. “Our team members remain our first priority, thus we are offering all team members the opportunity to stay employed with the company, and we’ll work closely with each team member to facilitate the transition. We greatly appreciate the hard work and dedication these team members have put in over the years and hope they will continue to work for Sprouts.”

The company announced Monday that it was closing 10 other locations across the country — but it will also open new, smaller-sized markets in more than two dozen locations. CEO Jack Sinclair said the shuttered stores are larger than their ideal size, and some of them were simply in the “wrong” locations. The company also plans to move its Southern California distribution center in San Bernardino County to a bigger facility later this year.

Sprouts’ closure is another blow to the sprawling, 42,000 square-foot shopping center located on the 8550 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, which over the past two years has lost the 24-Hour Fitness and the Wing working space. The John Reed Fitness Center set to replace the gym remains under construction more than a year after it was announced.

Other tenants have struggled in the absence of a major anchor to attract customers to the center.

An earlier version of this story erroneously stated that Rawberri was closing.

People will either patronize a business or they won’t. There are no guarantees. It’s an age old story.. not every business will thrive. I’m not sure why everyone is so shocked and appalled. Sprouts was a great store but even from the beginning they never brought in the crowds.

I loved shopping at Sprouts, except WHY put such a store so close to TJs? Very dumb business decision. I will miss the store AND its friendly, helpful personnel

West Hollywood is hostile to business, The new LA Mayor will accelerate the decline of this city. Alarms bells should be ringing.

WH has always been a silly place….run by silly people…..so we don’t expect anything different from them.

Yes Ham it has always been silly but now it is downright hostile and quite sick on a path to the ER. No one recognized the symptoms but the patient is currently on cardiac arrest. While cresting a city for the miscreant tourists who are here to see nothing because there is no there here, residents are to be damned.

It’s called RENT.
High prices are part of the recipe, but it all comes down to inflation.
Now, who or what are you going to blame for that?
End of story

Yes all grocery prices have gone up but Sprouts prices are very high esp. w/TJs right across the street.

Sprouts as a concept is struggling. They wanted to be a small Whole Foods to start, now seemingly a Trader Joe’s by their new store size. I wonder with John Reed opening soon if Erewhon May take a shot here.

TJ’s should move into this more visible space with better parking

Let’s get real. The store was very good. It carried a lot of items you would not find at the three ludicrous super markets in this town. Especially the dreadful Gelson’s. Which used to be a class act. And now it’s just an overpriced rip off joint with the worst bakery in America. Thank God we have Trader Joe’s. They should replace this store with Aldi’s. There would be lines around the block to avoid Ralphs and Pavilions.

Aldi’s would absolutely dominate WeHo from that location. It’s the only market I’d leave TJ’s for!

What is amazing and most people don’t know is that TJ’s and Aldi’s are own ed by Germans. The two brothers. That’s why the quality is so good compared to the dreadful American markets like Gelson’s featuring Nabisco junk at a 50% markup.

I stopped in there twice a week until 24 Hour closed. It was so convenient to pick up a few things on my way home after my time at the gym. I haven’t been back to Sprouts since then because I suppose it’s easier to go to Trader Joe’s than to have to cross the street for only that reason. If I join John Reed Fitness I’m sure I would have been a Sprouts regular again.

The whole state of California is not business friendly, but West Hollywood is hostile to business.

Please, Sprouts is closing because their prices are too high for stuff you can get cheaper within walking distance, and by their own admission, that location is too big. The Sprouts corporation has bigger problems if it’s placing stores entirely in the wrong neighborhoods and closing them in under 4 years; other corporations have whole business departments which have that stuff down to a science
