Jonathan Hatami, prosecutor of child murderers, will challenge his boss in D.A. race

Jonathan Hatami, an assistant district attorney known for prosecuting heinous crimes against children, is throwing his hat into the race for Los Angeles District Attorney against incumbent George Gascon, who is also his boss.

Hatami gained national recognition for prosecuting the parents of Gabriel Fernandez, the 8-year-old Palmdale boy who was tortured to death by his mother and her boyfriend in the mid 2010s.

His career as a district attorney who fights for justice for children was inspired by his own traumatic youth. As kids, Hatami and his brother were taken by their mother as she fled her abusive relationship with the boys’ father. They relocated to California and hid out from the law for eight years before the boys were recognized from a missing child ad in the Ladies Home Journal.

Hatami spoke critically of Gascon when he was invited to speak at the Sheriff Department’s Community Academy last fall in West Hollywood, assailing him for removing the enhancements that increased penalties for particularly violent or egregious offenses, and he critiqued the zero bail initiatives.

He also had few kind words for the defund-the-police movement, and was baffled by West Hollywood’s plan to put more unarmed security ambassadors in the path of armed and dangerous criminals.

The primary election is scheduled for 2024.

I agree completely. I’d vote for a turnip a carrot or just about anyone over Gascon

I was shocked to learn that Gascon has never tried a case. His is a political agenda, pure and simple. Hatami sounds like a fascinating choice with his real-world experience.

As for “real-world experience” you do know about the Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón’s well established history as a police officer (LAPD commander, Chief of Police SFPD & Mesa Arizona) as opposed to reactionary corporate shills

Interestingly enough, lapd officers hate (to this day) Gascon because he was a career driven, self promotion obsessed narcissist. Which is exactly what his deputy DAs in SF and LA say about him. Terrible manager, and every thing he does is driven by optics for his image and campaign PR

NO, it’s a vocal few voicing that opinion who have a rather intense contempt for democracy or even the democratic process because it never favors their authoritarian position.

Surprise 🎉 the problem goes well beyond assistant county DA and extends into all levels of power. Being an extremist right-winger opens more doors to power than the highest levels of education ❗ Even when we are successful in getting Highly Qualified Progressives in a few positions by super majority votes, they are shadowed by dark money elites under the disingenuous guise of “victim’s rights.”

Dark money elites!

You can say George Soros’ name, don’t be shy

NO, you are making a false equivalency fallacy and, many times right-wingers attack him as thinly vailed antisemitism. George Soros is transparent in his funding of PACs, where as “dark money” is a case of outside wealthy donors posing as having originated from local “grass roots” sources. The term “astroturf” is even used.

He won by a landslide, so logically he has far more support beyond my vote alone.

Seems like a good candidate and someone with the appropriate level of integrity. George Gascon has unfortunately never appeared comfortable in his skin and thus makes troubling choices.

There will be some other high caliber candidates emerging. We all have to get behind the best one to ensure we sentence Gascon guilry of unlawful detainer of office–holding possession without providing services and to ejectment with no right of return to Los Angeles County.

Gascon has to go. I will be supporting this guy. LA is currently a lawless city.
