A group of local actors, musicians, and writers will debut their new musical “The Comics Code,” about the early days of Stan Lee and Marvel Comics at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, at Plummer Park in West Hollywood.
The team, which started off as a group of friends during the pandemic, has now grown into a full-fledged production with a director, actors, musicians and even interest from industry professionals. After almost two years of hard work and numerous table reads and performances for friends, the City of West Hollywood Arts Division provided a grant to help film a number from the show.
The musical revolves around Stan Lee’s attempt to use his comics as a platform to raise awareness about the dangers of heroin, but the powerful Comics Code Authority denies him permission to publish. This crucial moment forces Lee to make a difficult decision that changes the course of comics history. The musical also sheds light on the birth of iconic Marvel characters like Iron Man and Spider-Man.
The Plummer Park reading will be free and open to the public, and the team is eager to showcase their hard work to the audience.
“This is the first time the public are going to see what we’ve been working on,” writer Fletcher Crossman said. “We’ve got a great team of actors and singers – I think the audience is going to be blown away.”
The Comics Code reading will take place in Rooms 5 and 6 of the Admin Building.
