The sound and fury of the sheriff’s department signified nothing today as a showy, 10-hour-long standoff across the street from the West Hollywood Gateway ended when deputies discovered the suspect was not, as they thought, barricaded in his apartment.
Deputies are now combing the night streets for the suspect, whose identity is known by authorities but has not been released. He allegedly fired multiple shots inside The Dylan apartment complex Friday, injuring a woman in an adjacent unit and sparking the standoff..
The shooting was reported about 8:15 a.m. at the building at Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, according to the sheriff’s department. A sheriff’s spokesman told KNX News at the scene that the woman — in her 50s — was shot twice, once in the upper body and once in the lower extremities by bullets that passed through the wall of her apartment.
Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, sheriff’s officials said.
Sheriff’s deputies unsuccessfully attempted to make contact with the suspect in a third-floor apartment, prompting a standoff and evacuations of some building residents.
Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue were both closed in the area, snarling traffic. At least 15 sheriff’s department vehicles were on the scene, plus two Bear Cat SWAT vehicles, LAPD, Beverly Hills PD, the Fire Department and two EMS vehicles. Dozens of agents, officers and deputies could be seen outside, and there were likely more inside the complex.
Members of the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau were brought to the scene via a large military-style helicopter, which landed on La Brea just north of Santa Monica.
Shoppers at the Gateway had front-row seats to the action all day long. Many were blown away by the spectacle; others were not impressed by the sheriff’s show of force.
Nine hours into the standoff, sheriff’s deputies stormed the suspect’s apartment at about 5:15 p.m. but found it empty, according to reports from the scene.
There were no immediate reports of any other injuries.

Now that the shooter has been identified, I’m wondering…was he living in one of the few precious “low income affordable units?“ At the risk of sounding judgemental, if so, it doesn’t sound like he really deserves one!
And I also wonder why he shot his gun 5 times in the first place, and at whom?

Over 17 vehicles and STILL a dismal failure. Did they search the building?? Get scent dogs? Interview residents? This is just one of those modern “show of force” theatrics that the modern militarized police demonstrate periodically just to remind all of us who’s boss. It’s like Soviets parading the nuclear missiles on May Day which is the Cold War equivalent of waving your average dick around. Ever since the LA Riots in 1992, it’s tradition. In the last 3 years the suspect has been arrested for being an ex felon in possession of a firearm , possession of meth, as well as being part of a larger Identity theft and loan fraud enterprise.
Perhaps you should get out there and show them how it’s done. But something tells me you’d break down in tears at the first glimpse of a gun.
Bottom line, there was a shooter. This is not a safe place to live. Money has been wasted on an idiotic group of people that normally would clean the streets called Block by Block. 9? 9? 9?! hours to “storm” the apt, only to find it empty. I live nearby; the rerouted traffic jam all but trapped my car in my driveway for hours and forced countless drivers to sit in snarled traffic for at least 30 min. With all of the tech and “big guns,” 9 hours seem ridiculous considering the suspect wasn’t inside.
I’m sure they were doing everything they could to make sure the public was safe and this guy couldn’t hurt anyone else. Always easy to criticize when you just standing back and watching.
I’m sure they would’ve done things differently had they known the huge inconvenience they caused you.
They didn’t even check all of the apartments in the building. they didn’t check on the residents in the building. Who knows if he was still inside in another apartment. This was handled so poorly. People stuck in their apartments all day with no information from anyone. No warnings not to come out of their apartment either. You had to actually come out and be told by police on a lower level that you could leave or go back to your apartment. This was ridiculous.
So this was a complete waste of resources. The shooter wasn’t even in the apartment.
How do taxpayers get reimbursed for this gross expense of the idiotic police forces?
How did he shoot into the next apt if he wasn’t in his???
