Rainbow lanterns coming to Mid-City WeHo

West Hollywood’s Mid-City should soon see lanterns strung across its stretch of Santa Monica Blvd., with City Council set to approve a bid for the project at Monday night’s meeting.

The color-changing orbs were first introduced to the West Side in 2019; the project was extended onto the East Side in 2021.

The Mid-City lanterns will be strung from Olive ⟷ Crescent Heights.

That would leave La Cienega ⟷ Olive and Crescent Heights ⟷ Vista as the last stretches of the road without the lanterns.

The staff report brings up technical limitations that apparently prevent the city from illuminating the rest of the boulevard using existing technology:

These project boundaries represent the technical limitations to the system as it requires a secure connection to a City network source to effectively communicate and control its operation and color selection. For all portions of the hanging lantern system, City network communications is supplied from a secured source located within City property. In this case, City Hall will serve as the communication equipment hub. Should future projects be desired, additional study will be required to determine how such lantern systems may be possible without City owned property or a secure City network source available to serve as a communication hub for the system. While the technical limitations of the systems may currently pose a significant challenge to expansion, staff expect that technology will continue to evolve and other options may become available in the future. Staff will continue to monitor the market for alternative solutions.

T&G Global DBA St. Nick’s submitted the sole bid for the project in the amount of $298,206. The company has installed all of SMB’s lanterns thus far. The East Side’s bid was $329,114.

The Rainbow Lights (Third try to comment. And with each try I get a tiny tad testier. ) Why not create a Budget Oversight Office of Real Money Crunchers? Prioritize NEEDED projects within our existing budget. When these have been addressed and approved and put in motion. Move on. Create a WeHo Wishlist and if there is any money (any funding left over). Move to the wish list and discuss what is a real wish and what is wishful thinking? AND WHAT IS DELUSIONAL. Decide which wish makes the best use of the funds. Realizing that this idea requires adult… Read more »

Apparently this is a result from a Council approved initiative.🙄

Before I comment–WeHo staff – STOP TWEAKING THE SITE. Every week you make it harder and more draconian to comment, read article and participate – even passively in Wehoville.. I just lost most of my comment on Rainbow Lights. Let it have a useable format and let it stay simple to read.

Very strange behavior on the sigh in order to comment. To avoid a loss, make a very quick comment on laptop, take a screen shot with your phone because the original comment will disappear and give you endless nonsense. Reboot and try again. Can’t this be a simple process without being deluged by google ads and worn out videos of Villsgarosa?

Meanwhile, virtually every neighborhood street in West Hollywood could use more street lights to cut down on some of the crime.

$358,000 worth of tacky. The City has little ability to identify quality and value. They have forsaken the values of our Main Street, given its historic relevance which could been gracefully improved. Ignorant of history and unskilled at evolutionary improvements and development yet highly paid for these unsophisticated decisions.

The ones on the Westside are broken again. They last about a week when a bunch of them are either dead or having a seizure.

By the way…the lanterns that are on the Eastside (which most of the residents didn’t want…we want MORE SHERIFFS) DON’T WORK. The last time I was down there they are all stuck on blue. They don’t change color. What a stupid waste of money. And I haven’t seen a Block-By-Block ambassador patrolling either on foot or bicycle in months.

I have NEVER seen a Block by Block Ambassador ever.

What about Hancock to La Cienega?
This would complete the actual Rainbow district AKA the epicenter of Weho nightlife and tourism.

This from a city that reduces the number of LASD deputies under the guise of fiscal responsibility (at least according to Sepi Shyne). I’ll trade the lanterns for more deputies, please.

I’m with you Alan. Pretty lanterns aren’t going to bring anyone to Weho when the perception is it’s unsafe.

A City Council that concentrates on cosmetics, rather than the deeper more important issues like our public safety, can be described with one word…SHALLOW!

$300,000 to hang plastic lanterns over the street and we can’t come up with the money to restore the number of sheriffs deputies that we had before the pandemic?! This cities leaders have their priorities so screwed up. Vote. Them. Out!
