5PM TODAY: Thelma Houston concert at Plummer Park

The City of West Hollywood annually celebrates the rich traditions brought to the United States by Russian-speaking immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

Each year, the City recognizes Russian-speaking Community Cultural Heritage Month to embrace the diverse identities and cultural history of Russian-speaking community members whose origins span wide-ranging territories with varied religious and social traditions.

On Sunday, May 21, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the City and its Russian-speaking Advisory Board will host the 22nd Annual WeHo Mishka Festival at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. The event will embrace the opportunity to explore and share the deep historical elements of Russian culture.

Grammy-winning recording artist Thelma Houston will perform as part of a gala concert from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Houston’ is known for her 1977 hit “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” which became a chart-topping hit and won her a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Thelma Houston continued to release music throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with notable songs like “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning” and “If It’s the Last Thing I Do.”

The day will also feature the 17th Annual Russian-speaking Community Awards presentation and a reception for the Art of Wellness exhibition currently showing in Long Hall. For more information, call (323) 848-6501.

Tchaikovsky, fine vodka, the Faberge Egg, and, of course, Thelma Huston are the greatest exports from Russia. But I’m not sure if I actually give two roubles.

I was thinking the same thing. I love Thelma Houston but I don’t know how she “contributes to the opportunity to explore and share the deep historical elements of Russian culture.” But I just might go to see & hear her myself.
