Pickle will be WeHo’s 1st Drag Laureate if Council gives their blessing

The queen headed toward becoming West Hollwood’s first Drag Laureate is a really big dill.

Singer and comedian Pickle was the applicant chosen by the city’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission for recommendation to City Council, who will vote on her appointment soon.

Pickle’s career spans eight years, during which she has delighted audiences hosting and producing drag shows at iconic venues like Flaming Saddles West Hollywood and The Abbey. Her exceptional skills have led to collaborations with notable organizations such as Amazon, YouTube, and the LA Music Center.

Beyond her performances, Pickle is deeply engaged in community work and activism. In collaboration with The Phoenix, a nonprofit serving the sober community, and the city of West Hollywood, Pickle helped create Vibez, a safe space for hundreds of sober individuals to celebrate joyfully during the annual “#BOOM” sober New Year’s Eve party.

Pickle is also dedicated to education, conducting youth drag workshops at the LGBT Center’s Models of Pride and developing original drag curricula for middle and high schools. She is at the forefront of the LA Chapter of Drag Story Hour, captivating young minds and showcasing the versatility of drag. Additionally, her program “Shakesqueer” at the LA Public Library combines drag and Shakespeare, introducing students to the intersection of art and performance.

As Drag Laureate of West Hollywood, Pickle says she aims to empower drag performers and foster their creative potential. She has plans for public meetings, professional development workshops, and groundbreaking programs that push the boundaries of the art form. One idea is an exhibition on drag history, featuring a performance highlighting each era.

Pickle’s dedication to drag has earned her many honors, including a certificate of recognition from LA City Council in 2019. She serves as a spokesperson for the drag community due to her media presence and engaging voice.

“I seek to protect people from the idea of permanence,” Pickle said in her application. “Drag shows us there is nothing in this world that is exactly as it appears, there is no line of prose that cannot be written as poetry, and there is no creature on this Earth that does not, at some point, shed its skin to become something new.”

I thought this was interesting…from a New York City paper: “Then there’s this: Pride Month isn’t just about gays anymore. It’s about the whole “LGBTQI+” crowd — a “community” most gays never asked to join and whose guiding ideology makes most of us scratch our heads in confusion.  Indeed, we’re in the odd position of seeing what used to be our movement co-opted by activists whose wacky theories about the nature of gender render such labels as male and female, gay and straight, utterly meaningless. Who’s thrilled by this development? Not many people, gay or straight.” This is ringing true to a FAR larger… Read more »

Excuse me? The United States pride movement was STARTED by transgender women and drag queens. It was never “your” movement.

You have the internet at your fingertips (and you’re obsessed with leaving nasty comments on articles about drag queens), look up some history on the Stonewall, The Black Cat, Cooper’s Donuts, etc.

Yes, absolutely, let’s look at just some of what happened pre-Stonewall. Both Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera admitted that they did not, in fact, start the riots. There are decades of history supporting efforts at securing gay rights, including organizations such as The Mattachine Society in Los Angeles, the Daughters of Bilitis in San Francisco, Chicago’s Society for Human Rights (gee…1924!!!). Stonewall is a quaint narrative, but ignores a broader factual historical narrative. Debating from a position of fact is quite important.

Okay? I never said Stonewall was the first instance of fighting for gay rights . I even gave examples of others here in Los Angeles before Stonewall…so not sure why you think I said it was the first?

Do you need a reprint? What you said was Queens and “Trans” led the gay movement, which was and is a big RED LIPSTICK LIE!
And to remind you of our other lie, my “obsession” that you speak of is to make sure people know that the majority of GAY people DO NOT support CHILD GROOMING weirdos hanging out in schools telling kids to be drag queens. That seems to be the climax of your educational aspirations.
Trans people DO NOT lead or speak for the majority of Gay people. Deal with it.

I left an answer but WEHOVILLE appears to have an issue with people pointing out facts. Drag queens nor Transsexuals led the GAY Movement.
I have no issue with fun, fabulous drag queens or Trans people, unless you start stepping into the world of children, which makes you nothing less than a predator groomer.
I’ll double post this with my OTHER replies that WEHOVILLE censored on TWITTER for ALL Gays to read.

to be quite honest its pride and im busy, the editor is not feeling well, and your expectations of a person, sitting here, monitoring comments 24/7 at anything close to west hollywoods minimum wage rules would cost thousands per week. the message boards are not an entitlement, its a hard job that is not appreciated and probably should just be eliminated due to the rash of accusations that come our way for trying to support a community engagement platform.

Honestly, I actually believed it was computerized with a set algorithm.
The hard work and effort you and your skilled team gives us, the community, a voice that is vital and legendary.
I am extremely grateful. I wrongly assumed there was a set posting rule scanner like many news services. So much is automated these. My fault and sincere apologies. Thank you for clarifying.

And where did I say that you said it was the first of anything? Pride did not start with Stonewall. Pride as it is now known started with a one-year anniversary commemoration of the Stonewall riots when it was a political march. The Stonewall riots were a direct result of decades of activism and organizing. You might recall (among the references I originally noted) the “Reminder Day Pickets held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia for several years in the early 1960s. Stonewall was an important event in history, but not the genesis current narratives suggest it was.

More child grooming. How in the hell did this become a primary push among gay folks? And this whole immature alphabet tag of extreme political correctness, “Oh gee, let’s give EVERYONE a letter to identify them like little silly pets.” BLT+ (easy on the mayo)
This sh8t needs to stay OUT of schools. Half the kids today can’t even communicate intelligently in English, need I comment on their math, science, history and geography skills.

This is the result of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission’s responsibilities? They vote on their own selections? Do they speak for the public? Well no. Seems pretty limiting and hardly qualifies for Art or Cultural seriousity. In a normal world children out grow these games but not in West Hollywood, home of the permanently aggrieved 10 year olds living in Peter Pan Ville.

Why would you mention being gay? Whose business is it other than yours. Life is not a confessional, it is not a letter of the alphabet, it is not a political identity unless you subscribe to that nonsense. Just be and conduct yourself like a responsible, respectful human and avoid making a victim of yourself. This Drag Laureate program is nothing more than a political strategy

There was no mission to making anyone ashamed. One doesn’t need to know everything about a person. The very act of being overt about it often sets in motion an entire unwanted dynamic which actually is the reverse of acceptance. It could easily relate to Feminism, something I personally never embraced and thus had no issues navigating socially or professionally.

greeneyedguy
greeneyedguy

How do you still not get it?

The reason you might see LGBT people being so “overt” is the fact they were taught and groomed to repress that part of themselves! Hell, it was illegal for some people still alive today to even be gay in this country!

Straight and gay people did not have equal treatment in this country. The faster you understand that, the faster you’ll shed that attitude.

These particular people whose names you may recognize in their respective fields did not repress themselves as children or adults. They simply were and did not attract any negative vibes, controversy or give traction to anything that was controversial. They also did not represent themselves as different nor play victim. That is a major difference. Take time to think about it.
